My story.... put a deposit down for a spot in line... things changed car got sold..... highly regarded Southern CA seat restorer, refused refund and offered credit..... disappointing due to the fact I did other work with him......

That's not right. I refuse to take a deposit unless I'm doing a custom job for you specifically. If it's my regular run of the mill parts I make in batches, I'll put someone in line free of charge. When the parts are done you get notified and either you buy or pass. I couldn't sleep at night if I took someone's money and didn't give them anything but grief.

I don't know if he still does it, but people used to buy and sell places in line at Raby's like they were options. Build plans changed, someone who had been waiting a year and was 3 months out could sell his deposit quite easily, and usually at a little profit, and Jake was cool with it.
