Do 997.1 based Turbo Carreras seem cheap?
I've been noticing that the 997.1 based Turbos (cabriolet) are frequently selling for the low $60's (asking prices), often on cars with under or around 50k miles. A heavily modified one recently sold on eBay for $45k. I believe these cars retailed for around $160k new, so that seems like a bargain to me. Am I missing something? Of course the non-turbo 911 of these years has an IMS, but it's my understanding that the Turbo of this era employs the Metzler engine, which is immune to IMS issues, is this not correct? Are there other mechanical issues with these cars that might account for the low prices?

997.1 Turbo cabs are a bargain. They are reliable cars if maintained correctly. If something goes wrong they aren't cheap since your dealing with a $150k plus vehicle new. The clean 6spd Coupes with specific options command a significant premium, so if you're in the market for cab (especially tip) you can find yourself an amazing deal. Just make sure to do a thorough PPI. Basic neglected maintenance items like replacing new plugs, brakes, & tires can easily run you $5k. Always buy the best Porsche you can afford.

Get the 09/997.2. It's well revered and the most desirable because it's the last Mezger and the last year (well almost) you could get a manual. I owned an 09 Cab for years and sold it last year for close to 80k with 21K miles on it.
Saying that, it was hard to sell. Took me many months. Everyone wants a coupe, so that's an advantage for you today, but not so tomorrow when you go to sell. The water (inlet?) pipe needs to be pinned because I think it was originally glued in place. Costly fix, but not necessary unless it goes on you. This car is a beast. 485HP and comes on quick. Be ready to get tickets because there's almost nowhere you can drive these cars on a public road; they're just too fast. I felt mine was wasted as I only drove it 1000 miles a year, although I did take it on the track, once. Holy crap. I think they're a bargain today. Make sure it has had all the required Porsche dealership services (expensive: they're required by time not mileage)) and require the paperwork to prove it. Over rev reports are over hyped, but make sure you at least get one and learn what it means. I'm guessing a well equipped 09 Cab with decent low miles, no ceramics (don't need them) Sport Chrono (must!) and the normal bells and whistles would be a good deal in the $60's. Good luck.

09 is still a 997.1. All 997.2 have the 9A1 DFI motor.

The 09 is considered the sweet spot for allot of enthusiasts. Last of Mezger with the updated PCM system.

2009 is pretty nice, feels much more modern inside than my 2007 because of the PCM. Performance is the same however.
