Current M491 Values
I recently purchased an '84 M491 in Slate Blue with Beige interior.
Local Microsoft manager retiring back to UK. My intention is to sell it. Very nice driving car with no mechanical issues. Has 198k miles, but Doesn't look it! Passenger seats looks like new. No oil leaks, smoke, etc. Has 180-185 compression, and runs and drives great. COA, both keys, Owners manual, tool kit, tire compressor. $57k in service receipts back to 1990. Clean carfax. Stock Fuch's. Does have newer $3k B&B full exhaust. Ownership history is older professionals. Curious what The best route is for resale and value? Thinking of Listing on Bring a Trailer. Appreciate any insight. |

Not sure on the M491 but driver 930s with miles comparable are going for mid $70k. So if your near that number you’re too high. I’d say mid $50s

I’d agree based on this sampling. https://bringatrailer.com/search/m491/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Cracking 50k with 200k miles seems like a stretch to me. And while BaT is your best bet for maximizing value, there’s no guarantee that they’ll accept it.
|
Yes... $50k is a stretch. I'm more realistic
And looking in the $40's... Funny... I had. '78 930 with 238k that was a great driver Like this car. i think when you get an honest car it treats You right:) |
Jeez. Those are some high mileage cars you’ve had. If I added up all of the miles on my 930’s, they don’t equal this car alone.
I think 40’s is more realistic for this car, though BaT is known for surprising to the upside. Maybe this color generates more interest and proves me wrong and it breaks 50k. It is a far better color than most imo, so I guess it’s possible. |
Does the $57k in receipts include major engine and trans rebuilds?
|
Full Transmission Rebuild approx 25k miles ago. No
Receipts as far as engine Rebuild. Compression Numbers are good at 180-185. Starts, runs, and drives great. Doesn't leak a drop of oil either. |
Doesn't leak a drop of oil...famous last words.
|
That is a great candidate for a hotrod with a 4.0....

She's a beauty!
You might check this RL thread that we have going... https://rennlist.com/forums/911-forum/974996-m491-m470-911-carrera-1985-1989-values.html You'll note that there's an '86 mentioned that's also pending potential BAT listing. |
Even with the high miles it is a special car, if somebody wanted what sounds like a well sorted driver at half the cost of a lower mile 491 it would be a great choice. As an owner of a 88 Turbo-Look, I can say they are one of the best driving 3.2's out there. I assume your price point has room for profit. Good luck with the sale.

hmmm...Microsoft mgr....didn't Bill Gates once own a 930 just like this? (remember that Bill Gates speeding ticket thread while back? pic of car also, and looks very familiar!)
|
doh...(head slap)...yes, I do believe that BG's car was an actual 930 - not an M491
|
If you're looking for $40's, shouldn't be any need to mess with BaT. Dump it up on Pelican and it should move quickly. Miles are an issue, but easily fixed with price.
|
Bill Gates had a 79 930 petrol blue with black interior.
