Engine temp gauge craziness

2012 Cayenne diesel, occasionally on cold start up the temp gauge needle goes to maximum and the temp light flashes.
Obviously the engine isn’t overheated, after a few minutes it settles to normal...

It is a road car, stock boost, negligible drop off at high revs.

Will putting a shim or two in cause problems/damage or ok?

1987 Euro spec car in Australia.
My boost gauge stopped working ages ago so I plumbed in a new after market one with a vacuum line above the KLR in to the new gauge on a bracket below the radio...

Pulsing and smell

Reinstalled the rear glass which had come away...

Reinstalled the rear glass which had come away from the top frame without removing the whole rear hatch frame. A tedious and tricky job but got it done.

There was indeed a hose I had missed under the intake manifold. Connected it up and it starts and runs as it should now. Phew!

After disassembly and assembly a couple of times the tacho worked fine, but no idea really why.
However, after making an adjustment to idle speed (it was a bit fast) now the tacho shows a good idle...

The plug image shows the receiver place for pin 21 looks empty.

The second photo shows the plug in place and the red connector near the dme which looks like it terminates to an earth point.
