Update: now it works as it should and lights stay on behind defrost and fresh air when the headlights are in park or full on. Not sure what my issue was- perhaps it was I only had one of the 2 bulbs...

Hey hcoles, I just went through this with my 87. Replaced the seat switches and all worked great. I did end up buying a few motors and the connecting rods from someone and didn't end up needing them...
