Replaced CV Boots - Got Pics?
Well I finally broke down and fixed the split boots on the Drivers Side Half Shaft. Bought the Boot Kit (2) at Paragon since I was also buying the proper Lug Nuts for my Wheel Spacers anyways. This is one heck of a dirty job. 6 - 8mm Allen Bolts on the Tranny Side were a snap to remove but the Wheel side is another thing. I had to loosen one by one while lifting and lowering the wheel on the ramp to gain the leverage to break them free. Seemed like only 1 position that you can get them out. Anyways, this job took the majority of the day for me to do. Good thing the boots on the other side were fine. I'll get to those when I drop my transaxle to repair a front seal leak.

I took it for a good 10 mile spin and it really seems to feel smoother. Blue tape was to hold the pieces together while I bolted it up.
Bolts torqued to 30 pounds according to manual.

Double-check that torque on the drive flange bolts. The WSM spec on those Allen bolts is 59 lbs/ft., tech specs manual lists 64 lbs/ft. More than a few folks have been stranded with those bolts backed out.

Well done Sir: Glad to see I am not the only person who uses tape to hold things together during assembly. Once you torque the bolts. Drive the car and Re- torque. then paint the bolts so that you can see if they loosen up.

Dano check the WSM for pictures of this , from the other thread( with a WSM picture) it looks like you have the outer portion on the wrong way , the groove SB towards the halfshaft. But double check this

Hmm, then the PO had it wrong as if you look at my just pulled half-shaft, the groove is on the outer edge.

After screwing with these things and rebuilding them more than once ( I was bored and curious) I believe it is possible to build one with the joint body facing backwards. The big test is if the hub travels freely once it is all together. If you want I can see if I can build one backwards just for giggles ( did I mention I have an odd sense of humor) I guess it could even out the wear...So would swapping left to right...Whatever... more likely...It doesn't make much of a diff as long as the groove side faces the circlip and the joint hub moves and flexes freely.
BTW, it looks to me as if it was right to begin with.

WSM shows groove away. Its not a circlip groove.

Feeling groovy.
OK, now I am confused. I thought the grove on the hub AND the groove on the joint both faced the circlip. this is what I see in the WSM to lead me to this possibly mistaken belief.
![]() The groove on the joint (body) is facing the circlip. ![]() When assembled correctly the hub groove faces the same direction as the joint groove. Therefore, Both grooves face the circlip end. Yes?

Yeah, those whole groove crap totally confuses me too. If you look at your pic again, it looks like the groove also faces the shaft on the opposite side of the Half-shaft.

yea, I was HOPING that was the boot flange (#4) for the other side. I am reasonably sure that when I took the old ones apart, the groove faced the clip. But I am not so sure as to misinform others.
Hey, is there any market for rebuilding these things? I couldn't find anyone who sells them rebuilt, only used. And new is "prohibitive"

look for CV joint repair in the phone book.
there are a few companies that will sell you a newly rebuilt CV /half shaft with new CV joints. IIRC prices are about 225.00 per side

Wow, a lot more than the $25 in 2 CV Kits for DIY. My CV hasn't shot through the Rear Hatch going 100mph on Sunday, so I am guessing I am ok. I just rebuilt it as it was still in the car. I even oriented my work table to how the Shaft was taken out. Basically whatever side was facing the Tranny, still does.
