I just did my water pump yesterday - backed car onto ramps - Removed pump - had all the coolant caught in a couple of clean pans as I just did a flush last fall.

Reinstalled pump - removed trap...

Solved. Had 3 slightly bent crank position teeth on the flywheel. Thanks to Alpine Auto Works in Calgary for the diagnosis. Pulled the tranny again. Compared new flywheel to ols. Found 3 teeth...
