2014 911 Carrera S Front End noise
I just purchased a 2014 911 Carrera S with 8,875 miles
At very low speeds, when I turn the wheel fully left or right the tires or front end make a very loud popping noise and the car hops sideways. This occurs before full maximum turn on the steering wheel but gets worse as you turn further. It occurs in forward or reverse. If it starts you can ease back on the turn and it stops. It sounds like the tire is rubbing but no evidence of that on the tire or the interior of the wheel wells. It is almost like the tire is dragging across the pavement. Any help appreciated. dw

I have had the same behavior on my 2002 C4, and my Indy or two dealers could not identify any cause. My issue occurred at full turn lock, on cold surfaces or smooth shiny surfaces like garage/shop epoxy floors. I learned to adjust and accept it, and avoid it by not turning the wheels to full lock.
Hopefully, the thread you have started here can lead to a plausible explanation or solution. |

The problem could be a bad wheel bearing, ball joint, tie-rod end, CV joint or loose strut. The first thing I would suspect is a CV joint on the front axles. All of these things are easy for a tech to identify once it is on a lift. In the meantime, jack up one side and get a look at the rubber boots covering the joints. Use a mirror on a handle. If they are ripped, then water got in there and the grease came out. A bad CV joint would bind up on a turn but be OK going straight. The cynic in me suggests the previous owner knew the CV joints were bad and didn't want to shell out the $4K the dealer wanted to repair. I hope I am wrong.

Bad CV Joint?
After some additional pondering I confirmed that the tires are 9.5+ years old.
Ordering a set tomorrow when Tire Rack opens back up. Could belts be separating on both front tires causing the issue? Hope so, have to have new tires anyway... Tks for your response... dw

This is completely normal for 991s. Every car does it. I believe it is related to the suspension configuration. Just live with it and don't worry about it.

My 308 does the same thing. Its the suspension geometry and the tires. Especially evident on full lock at low (backing out of a driveway for instance) New tires might solve the problem for a while but it will be back.

Look up Ackermann Steering or Steering Ackermann.
It's complex and I don't completely understand, but the sound you hear when turning is the two front wheels not cutting the same arc. This happenstance gets greater the tighter the corner. The sound you hear is the inside tire "skipping" to keep up with the outer tire. |
