Porsche Crest Viva Vredestein Spare Tire! Story

Hello Friends,

I was camping with my wife last week in South Florida's Big Cypress Preserve, serious Everglades for anyone who has never been! We got to our camp site, set up and we noticed the back right tire was stone cold flat, a screw in the road. We lifted the hatchback and lifted the old carpet and there it was, the 23 year old SpaceMaster Vredestein collapsable spare. The 'Made in Holland' beauty was rested and ready to get pumped up. We bought the car used and someone has the orignal pump so a Craftsman 12v did the trick. The car sat for 5 days of camping and then it made the 58 mile trek back to Naples with all of our gear in the car and in a top carrier. I repaired the flat today, deflated the Vredestein and bolted it back in the hole. I hope it's there again in the future if I need it again.

Auf Wiedersehen meine Freunde

I heard there's was alot of magnesium in that spare. Makes a great 30lbs camp fire as well.

My spare saved my a$$ at an auto-x one night. However I have yet to get it fully deflated and re-installed into the hatch area. It just won't go down all the way.

Yes, I decided to inflate mine soon after discovering it. It never wanted to go all the way back down. It took some muscleing to get it to go back into the right shape. The hump in the hatch cover is slightly higher now I believe...

Is the spare supplied to the Americas different to those supplied in the UK? We have steel spare wheels slightly slimmer than the regular wheels:

UK law requires them to be fully inflated - or not present at all or else they are an MOT failure point.

Curiously it is debatable as to whether they are actually legal to use - because using different sized tyres on the same axle is illegal. The speed is limited to 60 mph according to the sticker on the wheel. I've never used mine but in a get you home scenario most certainly would.

Looks like the same, but here in the states they can be deflated. If they are inflated they wouldn't fit under the rear hatch carpet. In my state there is no law about having different sized tired on the smae axle, at least I think not, as people drive on 'doughnuts' sometimes while they are getting a flat fixed. Hell, it is Missouri, it isn't unlikely sometimes in St. Louis to see someone riding on 3 different sized doughnuts with 4 different rims doing 70 mph on the highway.

The US tires are indeed different. They are a collapseable spare, there is a big groove around the middle of the tire (on the sidewall) where it folds in, to make the entire tire about 2-3" bigger than the rim when deflated, and it inflates to be the same size as the other tires to prevent the different sized tire problem.
