annoying oil leak.

I'd love to hear what the experts think before I dive in. I have a 1989 944S2 that I will be turning into an SCCA ITR race car this winter. it's had an oil leak since I got it, and I was procrastinating repairing it thinking I'd get to it when I pulled the motor and did all the race prep work.

But now it's leaking in a more aggressive manner, shall we say. It's coming form the upper part of the engine, it appears. Near the front, just over the oil filter.

I know my 911, and have changed avery nut and bolt on it, as well as rebuilding it's motor and restoring the body, but this car scares me, LOL.

Can anyone give me hints before I tear into it? Are there any classic leaks in that area?

Thanks!

I never had any oil leaks in that area.
Most common oil leaks are from:
1. upper and lower balance shaft seals
2. front crank seal
3. front camshaft seal
4. rear main seal.
5. oil pan seal
6. valve cover gasket

If it is engine oil, it could be the valve cover gasket.
It will leak on the exhaust side because engine is inclined towards the exhaust side.
Are you sure it is not ATF from power steering hose? That's also a common leak.

Also, have you checked the camshaft chain tensioner pad?
If that pad disintegrates, it will destroy the cam chain and sprockets. Look at the pic in red circle.

Intersting.

I am sure that it's oil, as the oil consumption seems to back up the amount on the outside of the engine. The leak looks to be either significant, or pressurized when the engine is runnning, based on the quantity of oil on the engine.

I will begin to pull things and see whats what. (And check the cam chain pad)

valve cover gasket or the cam seal is my guess.

The tensioner in the picture should be replaced every 90k miles or so. There are varying theories on the time. I saw one go a 130k and it broke the head, and bent most of the valves. Not a pretty sight.

"I will begin to pull things and see whats what. (And check the cam chain pad)"

If you see chain grooves on the upper pad, replace both top and bottom pads at the same time for $150.
Or replace the whole tensioner assembly for $300.
I just replaced both pads and the chain at 130k miles. Cheap insurance.

"The leak looks to be either significant, or pressurized when the engine is runnning, based on the quantity of oil on the engine"

If it's pressurized, it could be a loose or bad oil pressure sensor in the oil filter housing.
It could also be the external oil cooler hoses and fittings.
Clean up the area and let the engine run for a while and you will see where it's coming.
