Dying interior carpet?
Hey all..
I just did the belts on a 84 944 today and the owner had a unique question that I couldn't answer straight up for him: He has tan carpet on the interior, with black door panels, dash, and seats. His question was "How would it look if he dyed the carpet black?" He has tried and tried to remove the stains on his tan carpet with no success (had a battery tray leak + 22 years of use). He really doesn't want to buy all new carpets, and thought it may work. Any suggestions for dye? Will RIT work? How color fast are we talking? Thanks for any info! -Nick

Consult a carpet shop. Rit will work. My wife did hers with Rit - mixed up a spray bottle and went to town. Black everywhere - lots of fun. Paint will work, too. After all, carpet's just plastic, basically.

I used a duplicolor carpet and fabric paint on the lower door panel carpet (from tan to black) eventually when your feet rub across it from getting out etc it eventually wore off. I prepped it well but i think in between coats try brushing it with a soft bristle to get consecutive coats at all angles on the fiber rather than just the tips.

I've read on the World Upholstery web site that you can't do it successfully....of course they also would like to sell new carpet. They do sell carpet dye also. Have him read about it on their web site.
