Upgrade from 911 SC to 996-should I ?
A few years ago, I bought a 1997 Tiptronic Boxster. Had a PPI which gave it the all clear.
Within 3 months I had over $4,000 worth of repairs racked up (overheating, electrical problems and Tiptronic (new) not shifting in the correct "map") and more needed so I got rid of it. I bought a 911 SC coupe-great car but not a daily driver in our (Western Australian) hot climate-no a/c. As the memory of the horror of Boxster ownership fades, I find myself once again attracted the Siren's call of a more modern Porsche. This time I'm considering a 996 coupe with a manual box and effective a/c (It's all my budget will allow-approx A$50-60,000. Any advice out there? Anyone done a similar move and your experience? Thanks, Phillip |

Being the owner of an older 1974 911 and a 996, I can relate. The older cars are fun to drive, but the more modern features and amenities of a newer Porsche is really appreciated, especially when it comes to daily driving!
Just do a search here and on other Porsche forums. You will find that the 996's have their fair share of problems........especially with the earlier 3.4 litre engines. However, if you find a good example, they are probably the best deal for the money these days! My advice would be to buy the later 2002 or newer 996 or perhaps a 997. The advice that's generally given is........Buy the latest and best condition car that you can afford. Good luck. |

The Boxster and 996 are very similar, if not functionally identical under their skin. So, if you had bad luck with a Boxster...
That said, the 996 is a highly refined car with lots of power and crisp handling. The 911SC is a fun car, but not a modern car by any means. I kindof like it in the middle - I have a 996 and a 1972 911RS clone. When I'm driving the 996 (or Boxster Carrera), I have A/C and airbags and iPod integration. When I'm driving the '72, I have air cooled oil smell in the interior, a harsh ride, and a big smile on my face. But after a day of driving the '72, I'm happy to get back into something more civilized for the trip home (typically my 5-Series BMW). -Wayne

I have an SC and a 996 (besides other cars). I love them both and would find it hard to give up either one. The 996 is modern and comfortable, but for all-around fun, the SC is my choice. The 996's limits are just too high to enjoy on public roads, at least where I live. So I depend on my SC when I feel like getting a little rambunctious.

My only input based on past Porsche experience is to really spend the time (and some $$) on the up front due dilligence before buying. Do a really thorough inspection. If you don't feel qualified, pay someone. Also, try to get your hands on service records. A lack of service records could be a warning sign. Some dealers will arrange for you to talk with the previous owner (if they are agreeable, of course). Good luck!

I like to see cars with very frequent oil changes (every 5000 miles). This seems to help keeping the engine failures down...

Have you considered a 964 or 993? I had a 996, no problems, just not for me. I now have an SC, great car! a lot of fun but lacks creature comforts (thats why I love it). A 964 or a 993 for sure, would give you some old school feel with a touch of comfort. Good luck.
