Looking to buy - new to Porsche
Hello;
I am new to Porsche and will be looking to buy my 1st car shortly. I am interested in the Carrera/911 model series, used, and was told the 4S is the model to buy. I am looking to spend $35,000 - $45,000 and could use some advice on what year, model, mileage to buy, etc and any other advice that will help. I have been told I need to have a PPI inspection done to the car? The car will be for everyday driving, not garaged (will be in driveway), probably 12k miles driven annually, perhaps track once a year? Not sure if I am missing anything other than those facts? Ummm...yeah, could really just use good advice. Also I have been looking on Craigslist for a personal owner to buy from. Is this a good idea or is dealer better. Also, I guess like any car owner I don't want to sink $3gs annual for maintenance. Thank you in advance for your help. |

What series are you looking for? I'll assume a 996 (1999-2004). The later C4 has the sexy wide hips but unless you need four wheel drive for the winter time, I would skip it. Your price range should find you a very nice car.
As you said, the best thing you can do is get a PPI. If you haven't already do some research on IMS bearing, RMS leaks, etc. (do a Google search on "996 engine failure"). Don't let everything you read scare you off, just educate yourself on what your looking for. I'm an aircooled owner but hope to get a 996 sometime next year. Good luck in your search!

Where do you live? Why do you want/need AWD?
Do you want a coupe? Convertible? Manual? Tiptronic? There are LOTS of options on these cars, maybe consider ones you deem "required" or "nice to have" or "don't care". Read up on some of the maintenance / cost of ownership concerns as well. I'd look on Pelican, Rennlist, Craigslist, Autotrader. Also consider joing PCA for more advice. buying from a dealer that is not a Porsche dealer can make having a PPI more difficult. Buying from an independent has plusses and minuses. Be sure to get a carfax account to check available public records.
