What oil filter canister wrench ?
I am trying to get things together to do a oil change on my 2001 996.
I read that I use a Audi/VW wrench on the oil canister. I went to Advanced Auto and they are clueless as to what size I need. I said how do you usually tell and they said we take a oil filter off the shelf and match up the wrench size. I said that won't work for me as the 996 uses a canister. I have not owned a canister equipped engine since my 283 powered 66 Chevelle. Can some one tell me what size wrench to buy locally so I can change the oil this weekend on the 2001 996? I would prefer getting one from a local chain parts store as I do not want to wait on ordering it. BTW - I already have a 15 qt drain bucket and a 8MM alan socket as well as new filter and and seals from Pelican but I need a oil canister wrench. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I will take my metric ruler to Advanced Auto and see what I can come up with.

If you get a metal cup type and it slips, like both of mine have at times, try putting a paper towel or newspaper over the "wrench" to take up any slop before you slide it (firmly) onto the filter housing. I have had good luck doing this when the housing was tight and the wrench wanted to jump flats.

I use a rubber cinch type from Harbor Freight. It tightens as you turn it. Very inexpensive and works great. It doesn't damage the canister.

I was only able to get to Advanced this morning.
They only had 73mm/14 flutes and 74/76 mm/15 flutes. I bought one of each until I can locate the 74mm x 14 flutes/flats. I may have to go the rubber cinch route

Good luck. I was able to take my prospects into the parking lot and see which one fit. The one I bought was private labeled penzoil... though I am sure they didn't actually make it. I bought it at auto zone if memory serves.

I went to O Rileys and they only had 75 x 14
I tried both of the ones I purchased at Advanced and the larger diameter one would go on if I tapped it. But of course it is not a perfect fit. I am also having fun finding Mobil 1 10w - 40 which was suggested to me to use during the "winter" season in Raleigh NC. So far Advanced and O'Rileys only have 10W-40 High Mileage Mobil 1.

About 30 years ago I bought a nylon strap wrench.
It's worked on everything with a spin on housing up to a 1200HP MAN diesel I helped install in a Bristol Bay fishing boat. Barlowdo I've been buying the 10W-40 High Mileage Mobil 1 for mine. Some Wal-Mart's usually have it, the local shops won't order without a special order fee. I have 119K in the engine and up here in the NWest we don't get your summer heat very often. I don't use any oil between 5000 mile changes. |

I have been buying Motul 8100 5-40, a Porsche approved oil.
Also recommended by LNEngineering Oils: What motor oil should I use? Which oil is best for my Porsche or aircooled engine?. Usually best prices from Turner Motorsports MOTUL 8100 5W-40 X-cess Synthetic Engine Oil - 5 liter jug - Turner Motorsport

I have 60k on my car and was not sure if the High Mileage Mobil 1 would cause and adverse effects on a a 60K car.
I figure High mileage applies to 80k and up but I could be wrong.

When I found out the oil filter canister is plastic on my 996 I decided to order the Filter wench sold thru this web site. A bit pricey but at least it is the correct size compared to what I could find in the local auto parts stores

Dont run any "high mileage" stuff in ANY engine unless it leaks like crazy and you're trying to sell it.
I use Total 15/40 synthetic. Motul is good too.

I changed the oil over the weekend with Mobil 1 15w-50
Some obs 1. The magnetic Plug I bought off of this site takes a different size Allen Key than the 996 OEM plug. The mag is more the size I use on my 66 911. 2. Getting the correct amount of oil level is pretty time consuming and the digital gauge seem to read differently more often than I would expect. ![]() 3. Depended on the dip stick although it is not easy to read. 4. After the oil change first odd thing was a sound like a valve lifter that was not quite pumped up like you would hear on a Chevy V8 with hydraulic Valve lifters when oil is low. 5 Above sound went away and 1/2 a day later after the car was parked outside "covered" I experienced a odd engine idle problem that actually made the car rock/shake. This went away after a small drive. Has anyone else experienced 4 and 5 above?

I would worry about 15W-50 messing with the vario cam. Best to use 0W-40, 5W-40, or 5W-50 as Porsche recommends.

Interesting as my owners manual listed 15w 50 as one of the choices.
