IMS / After Market Warranty

Found a pretty amazing example of a 996 cab here in LA that has the right miles and is the right price. However, I'm obviously worried about the IMS failure (car has 102k miles). Has anyone ever bought an after market warranty on these cars? If so, is the IMS covered? Car will be my daily driver.

I don't trust those warranties. You better read the fine print. It is in there best interest not to pay out on such a large failure. I still think you best defense is to purchase a vehicle that has proof of a IMS replacement especially if it is going to worry you.

This topic has been covered extensively on several websites; do a search and you will find more information than you probably ever wanted on the subject.............

An after market warranty will cost ~ $2,500 - $3000. LN Engineering IMS bearing replacement ~&2,500 installed. Just get the bearing replaced as soon as you can.

The aftermarket warranties are a trip into a hell you do not want to face.

I just purchased an aftermarket warranty from my local "Porsche" Dealer. They use fidelity which seems to have a good reputation. The price depends on the car and mileage.

Power train only was 2500 bucks. I say get one. This one covers "all" lubricated parts which includes the IMS. I still may replace the RMS and the IMS.

There's no insurance that the LN bearing won't break either. I'm not scared and I love my 996. If it blows up twice you only pay for your deductible.

The factory IMS bearing is not lubricated, which is both why it fails and why many aftermarket warranties are worthless when they do............

It is part of the cam "system", bearing chains, etc and they do and have covered it. That is one of the reasons I choose Fidelity through the Porsche dealer.

They consider that a part as being "internal" to the engine and it is covered. I asked, and researched and talked to someone who has had it was covered.

Hopefully , I won't need it . . . and honestly I'm not losing sleep over it.

I would specifically get that the IMS related failure is covered in writing..............old legal adage: “What isn’t in writing, isn’t……………”

Isn't Fidelity a bank! LOL LOL Make sure that the block is covered in this warranty. Many times if there is catastrophic damage to an engine it usually states in a warranty that if the cost of the repair is equal or exceeds the book value of the vehicle it won't be covered. However you are right no need to loose sleep over it. Just drive and enjoy. JW

The guys at Porsche of Beverly Hills seem to really like Fidelity. When I called them about getting an after market, they were the first place they sent me to.

Decided against the aftermarket. Testing two different 996. They're tip, but after I wore out my knee and my clutch in LA traffic on the 3.2 I had, I felt like this might be better (sacrilege I know!).

Anyway, talked to some guys at TRE and foregoing the aftermarket. Instead, I'm just going to factor in the IMS/RMS into the price of the car. Will get those and the oil separator done at the same time some point this year.

Tiptronic isn't so bad. I have a Tip and a manual. yes my first choice would be manual. But now i have the best of both worlds. You will enjoy it with the Tiptronic.
