Is the 996 GT3 One Car to Do it All?
Thread title shamelessly taken from the video that Jack made about his car. I hope that is okay.
I am seriously thinking of selling my old cars and buying either a 996 GT3 or a 996 Turbo. I haven't seen a 996 GT3 up close since they were new, and honestly, I don't remember all of the features & specs for the car. Is the 996 GT3 civilized enough to drive on the street at all? I understand the Turbo is going to be the more comfortable touring car. I don't want a 100% daily driver, but I want a car that I can drive to work on nice days during the week. I absolutely want a car that I can drive to the track and car shows/club events on the weekend. Is the GT3 the better fit given the focus on the weekend track & driving events? I guess the best way to answer your question is if money was not a factor everyone would buy both. Arguably each car was the best in the world when new at the purpose for which it was designed. Conversely Porsche went to the expense of developing 2 different models so that they did not have to compromise in the design of either. It sounds like you are aware of the different intents of both cars & you just lack some seat time in both to decide.

The turbo will be the more comfortable to drive on a daily basis, the all-wheel drive system is excellent if you plan on driving in snow or inclement weather.
Regarding track use, depending on your level of experience and expectation both cars will deliver a satisfying ride. Each car has its own characteristics which are quite impressive. Depending on your budget the 996 turbo is without doubt the best value today. Hope this helps, Mike |

GT3 all the way, if you do / want to do several track days per year. If I was in the position you describe, I would make the move in a heartbeat.

I have been thinking about the same thing! 996TT have become pretty affordable and it looks like there is a decent selection to pick from.
As far as negatives I have read about some problems with 2nd gear popout and coolant fittings problems. I'm not too impressed by the 996 interior. I have never had an opportunity to drive a 996 so that will be my next step.

Interestingly enough, if you stick with the black "full leather" interior, it's rather nice and durable. I have that in my 2000 996 and have lived in that car for 147,000 miles. The interior has worn well.

Shuie - that's a hard one, and an easy one. As has been said it earlier, it depends on your use of the car. I've had both, and would say for true daily driving I'd go turbo....if its going to be an "extra" car, with street use, occasional track outings, etc...go gt3. I found the gt3 wing to be a bit "boy racer" for everyday use, and the turbo too "bland" for track use...but would say both are over the top capable for either. Good luck...you actually can't lose with either.
