Getrag vs Aisin
Hello guys,
I am just wonder if the G97 manual transmission is any better than the G96 as they are made from two different manfuracters (Aisin and Getrag). Thank you, Jim

Is this Jim Wolf in Pasco, WA.?! This is Dave from the ag irrigation industry!
I have had 2 Getrag trannies and both have been bullet proof! The one in my 2002 996 is going to be tested when the new engine goes in with 450+ H.P.! The one in my early '89 Carrera has a 993 V-Ram with a lightened flywheel and 320 H.P. and has performed like a champ! The G-50 in the early '89 [from what I was told] was built to withstand 600 H.P.

When comparing the G96 996 Carrera gearbox to the G97 Aisin, they are very comparable. I personally like the Aisin better because the gearing is superior.
Porsche guys sometimes stumble at the thought of the Aisin because it is Japanese, not German. But Aisin has been the oem on such powerful sportscars as the Supra Turbo and RX7 turbo, as well as numerous other models like Miatas, WRX/STI and a majority of the Japanese grocery getters. They are the Japanese Getrag. |

Matt-
Odd question, but do you know the weight difference between the two boxes (I've looked everywhere)? I put the G97 in my 996 race car for the superior gearing and the car ended up being lighter than anyone could have imagined....2,440lbs w/ 6 gallons of fuel |

I don't have a weight but the Aisin gears are cross drilled like old 904 gears. They are definitely a lighter gear than the hefty Getrag gears. I wouldn't be surprised if the case was thinner too. Getrag over-engineers things.
