Automatic oil level gauge not working

I have a 1999 996 and I noticed over the last few days the oil level gauge - the digital gauge married to the clock is showing zero oil level and flashing for a few seconds then it disappears.

My oil level is right below the "max" line on the dipstick, and my oil pressure is spot on. If I am diagnosing this correctly it's the oil level sensor under the left intake manifold?

The Pelican tech article is a bit confusing to me with the wording. It neglects to specify if this is on the right or left side, but only that the knock sensors exist on both sides. If this is the case then I need to remove the passenger side intake runners to change this part? And if so, what else should I replace while I'm in there?

Are you going to drop the engine to do this, or will it be done in the car?

I'm accustomed to dropping the engine on my older 911's for just about everything. But this 996 is a much larger beast. I do not have a lift, but I have everything it takes to easily remove a 993 engine in my garage.

So with that aside, I would like to drop the engine but I fear time will be my biggest enemy as I'm limited to weekends mostly to complete the work.

With it out, the AOS is a snap, but doing the AOS with it still in the car can be a bit of a handful due to clearance issues. Pulling the oil level gauge sender can also be problematic due to its length and how the car is equipped.
