Wow!
I completed my intake/heat shield modification this weekend & have been fully erect ever since. I always knew it was gonna make a difference, but the acceleration, responsiveness, & new engine sound have eclipsed all of my expectations. The one thing I'd like to share, is that you don't need to spend tons of cash on these 'quote', 'unquote' performance systems made by the big name companies. In the tread entitled "air intake questions...help" by abcxyz, we looked at the vast array of offerings ranging from $175 to $400. Conforti, Dinan, ECIS, Par, Benfer, & Active Autowerke all site specifics & dyno's of why their systems are superior. Now most of these look awesome, & some (Conforti) are sheer beauty under the hood, but honestly, does the extra cash make a difference? I got a chrome short are intake from a company called Autobacs1 off Ebay for $28. Then I ordered a heat shield fabricated from a guy in San Diego (Stupenal turned me onto this), for $55. The heat shield was constructed of high quality plastic, so it doesn’t conduct the heat like a sheet metal one would, & only took a few minor modifications with a dremel to fit snugly in the engine bay. After doing the install, I took to the streets for some experimentation. On every occasion of extended racing around, I would return to the garage to check under the hood for possible problems. In checking the effectiveness of the heat shield, I put my left hand on the outside of the shield wall, & my right hand next to the filter. What a difference, I knew it would block the heat, but the air around the filter was actually cool to the touch. The $55 shield did it’s job, & the intake……………., well let’s just say ‘VAROOM, VAROOM’!

What kind of filter came with the short arm intake? I'm glad you got the install done, I've been doing nothing with my little summer project so I've yet to get started. Congrats, now post some pics!

Yah, I'll get around to pics soon, I gotta swipe a digital camera from somebody. Unless someone has a suggestion of the best way to get a hard photo uploaded.
The filter is very nice Stup. It's a cone that is open-ended to take in more air than a conventional K&N. The filter is trimmed in chrome & has a wire mesh over the filter material. It is not paper, so it is fully serviceable.

Did the same with mine, got a cheaper short intake than the one from Bavarian for $45 and a heatshield from same kid (Lukas). Car runs and sounds good. Have been trying to find a little rice to burn every night since.

I am planning on doing this with just some sheet aluminum ive got laying around in the garage. I need to make up a templte with some cardboard.
