325e that tachs 6500 easily??? whats up??
Really. I bought my first Beemer a few months ago after selling my 914 with no knowledge about BMWs what-so-ever. I was in the auto trader and they looked cool so I picked the first 2 door 5 speed 6 cyl I looked at for $1100.00.(just in case I want to race it some day).
The A/C was cold and the windows didnt work. But I was amazed at the torque and power. Turns out it is a 325e. 2.7l Eta model with an M10 (stamped on block). Had I known about e- models at time of purchase I would have passed it up. Now to the juicy stuff. This guy had it only 2 months as he got it in payment from a lady who had it only a year etc.... This car has an i model tach and speedo and hits 6.5K easily and often with a power band at 4500 getting to 6k in a hurry. WHATS UP WITH THAT?? Did someone down the road swap heads or something. Am I stupid and don't realise when to let up on the gas. Have you seen such a thing. I love it but I would like help to explain it. Any info would be appreciated. LEE:confused:

Urm....
Uhh....It can't be an M10. M10 is a 4 banger. Are you sure you got a 6 cyl?
Other than that, it could be an M20b25 from a 325i. A lot of people do those conversions. Send us a pic of your engine bay, and we may be able to tell you. In fact, send us some pics of the car in general and maybe we can help. Also, what year is it?

Oops sorry guys it was a couple of months ago I searched for a marking on the engine. I feel like such a novice. In BMWs I guess I still am.
On the dr side of the block it has 2.7 BMW ######## I cant see all the #'s but the 2.7 is clear.

Also is there a difference between the 2.7 and 2.5 visually in the engine compartment. I ask because I had a chance to buy a wrecked 86 318i and the engine compartment was identical.
Are the engines stamped with the M20b25 and if so where.

Well, it sounds like a hopped up 84 325E. Are you sure it's a six banger?
In the engine compartment you can spot some differences between the 2.7 vs the 2.5 if you have a lot of experience. For example, the valve cover mounting brackets are different slightly, as is the wiring harness.

See if you can find a casting number on the head...
A 325e shouldnt be able to spin up to 6500RPM. It could be that might have modified the engine to run an i cam or an i head. Generally I dont reccommend the combination as it presents a lot of problems. You need to modify oil gallies, pistons, etc... |
