Re-enabling disabled tweeters
I've replaced the front and rear speakers with coaxials a few months ago, and disabled the door mount tweeters at that time. I would like to reconnect them, but because the crossovers were mounted to the stock woofers, I wasn't sure how to connect the tweeters without blowing them. I'm thinking I need to take some of the electronic gadgetry off the old woofers and use it to filter the low end out.
Any electronics guys who have done this? There are two devices on the woofer. 1/ A bunch of copper wire wound around the back of the woofer, which might be the high filter to aim only low end to the woofer. 2/ A little cylinder like a capacitor which I'm thinking might be the low filter which will only allow highs out to the tweeter. Is it that second one? If so, do I just put that one upstream of the wire going up to the tweeter and connect to the positive terminal of the kickpanel speakers? Pzzzsstpmfp! (the sound I don't want to hear when I try this)

Personally, I wouldnt waste my time hooking them back up unless you upgraded them to a new sytle tweeter. They really dont sound that great compared with today's systems. If I remeber right, the little cylinder is the main item that filters out the low end. Just got out and get some Infinity Reference speakers. Great sound for around $150. Of course you'll also need to re-wire the stereo...

You'll need a high pass filter - they are really cheap. Put the filter between the positive terminal and the speaker. (So, upstream.)
I'd say pry out the factory tweeters and get a new set. I'll leave the new wiring as an exercise for the poster. (Mostly because I'm too lazy to figure it out for myself.) A frequency filter is just the proper combination of capacitor and resistor, so it sounds like both the canister (capacitor) and wound wire (resister) are necessary. But I vote for a new filter - that way you'll know what frequencies you're chopping off. btw, I like your onomatopoeia for blowing out a tweeter. ![]()

I think the factory speakers are also only rated for something like 30 watts...
