random missfire

1999 323i with 49k mi. check engine light came on at a stop light, then car began to idle very rough, borrowed neighbors snap on scanner and received codes, PO300 random missfire & PO304 missfire cyl.#4 I cleared the codes and took it for a ride check engine light back on and still very rough idle, checked codes, this time PO300 random missfire & PO302 missfire cyl.#2, any idea`s on what to check, or am I doomed for a trip to the dealer? any suggestions greatly appreciated.

any other ideas where to look?? would the fuel rail trim codes be caused by the miss fire or vice versa? I have been told by my two local dealers that they sell a awful lot of coil packs( set of 6) for this car, I`m wondering if its the coil pack`s that are bad, I`m open for all suggestions

I just replaced all 6 coil packs and still the same problem, very bad miss at idle, sounds like someone tapping the intake with a ballpeen hammer, and the smell of rotten eggs at the tailpipe, any ideas??

Often, the sulphur smell (rotten eggs) indicates a bad catalytic converter. Not sure how that could cause a misfire code or a fuel rail trim code. (Heck, I'm not even sure what "fuel rail trim" is!!)

well after the new coil packs the codes were,
fuel bank #1
fuel bank #2
randon missfire at cyl`s 1,3,5,6,
so I guess I just might have to go to the dealer to let them hook it up to the computer ($95.00) and let me know what the problem is, I hope it is something stupid like the plugs ,but if it were, why the codes at all cyl`s? for random missfire

Broken catalytic converter for sure. Sounds like it's probably broken and clogged..

if it is a broken cat would that be a item covered by emissions warranty? do you think that this would be a problem even though it has only 49k mi?
