18 button obc

Hi everyone hope everyone is well.

I own a 1996 e36 328i which is fitted withe the basic 9 button obc. The unit itself works but the display is poor.

I have recovered an 18 button item from friends written off vehicle which I tested before removing and was found to be in good condition.

I have read the article on the retro fitting to get this obc to function in my car.
I am not really interested in getting all the functions to work and was wondering if my single connector would function the check control and clock on the new obc.

When I fitted my black plug to the new obc I could not get anything to work.
Do you have to run some sort of setup coding or do I need to earth a pin on the other obc plug?

This has stumped me so any help would be appreciated.
Steve.
