Electic window problems. help

I tried a search and came up with nothing.. anyways.

My electric windows just magically stop working once in a while then start.... But now, they have stopped and have yet to work again.

Is there any common problems with these? I am not sure where to start. I am thinking it has to be the wiring because when they stop, both windows stop... example- I will push the bottun down, and neither window, passenger or driver, will move. but when they are working, both are. So im sure its not the actual motor part but possibly a faulty wiring?

Any help guys? thanks.

Edit- This is an 89 325iS. sorry.

Definately sounds like a wiring problem. If you have a manual with a wiring diagram it will help. Next time you have this problem, look for voltage at easiliy accessible points. Start at the fuse, then the switch, etc.

Peacock,
A common place to look would be the power window lock-out switch.

On my car it is located on the center console, right side, just forward of the window switches.

Thanks man, that was it. The switch has gone bad and I have to push it into the side for it to make a connection and work.

thanks.

I have a 91 318 e30 Cabriolet.
Both windows stopped working. For a while the windows would work when the ignition was on, but stopped once the car was started.
If I switched the ignition off, then on, they would work.
They are completely dead now.
The lights dont even come on.
There is no power at the light switches

I replaced the ignition switch as it seemed to be the problem.
This didn't help.

I have checked all the fuses.
I need to know where to start looking.
Do the windows work on a relay?

I have the hains manual. It refers to a relay.
The manual refers to relay K7, but the wording is a bit misleading.
It might be referring to the blower.
The line in the manual states:
Fuse 17(I think 17) : Heater blower (Relay K7), power widows
Does this mean the blower uses K7 only or both?? I dont know.

I have tested with a multimeter where the relay plugs in.
There is constant power on the 85,86 connection.
30,87 has power where the ignition is on, but this power doesn't feed through to the switches.

Obviously there is a wiring issue, but the wires dissappear under the carpet in front of the gear lever.

I dont want to run through numerous test and find out that I am testing the wrong relay.

PLEASE can someone assist!
Its summer here in SA, so having no windows is a REAL nightmare.

Thank You

Tony

My 87 325 had its passenger side stop working. I pulled off the door panel.. be careful not to rip that plastic stuff and tested for voltage at the connector. It was hot when I pressed the button. I was able to make it work by taking out the motor.. two screws and shes out and spray it down with electrical parts cleaner. I also greased the worm gear on it. Motor had gunked up and wouldnt even turn by hand before. Its worth a try... those relays youre talking about.. I think one operates both sides. Dont ask me where they are though (im a noob)
