Have kit, will assemble, but have fear...

I have a short shifter kit from K-Sportracing that's adjustable both in leverage throw and stick length, but when I tried to fit this the other day, I lost my nerve...

Jacking up the E36 328i and crawling under it, I realize I'm totally unable to see the little clip that secures the shifter rod to the lower arm. I'm just about able to put my fingers on it, and might be able to twist it off. But then I started thinking (always a good thing) - I'd need more than a bit of luck to be able to attach a new clip after changing the shifter. I can't see a thing over the drivetrain, and can only put 2-3 fingers on the little bugger...

Anyone got any tip, short of lowering the entire drivetrain? I was actually seriously thinking about drilling through floor to get to it topside, but resisted the urge as the car is in rather good condition...

Regards,
-Haakon-

I am pretty sure the book covers this very well.

There are also other writeups on the web.
