Sunroof problem & differential drain plug size

Hi everyone, I own a 93 325is and I am having problems getting my sunroof to work. The sunroof is functional but it usually requires 10-15 minutes of driving or just having the car run in order for it to work. I replaced the sunroof fuse but that didnt solve anything. I am planning on replacing the relay next to see if it solves the issue. If anyone has encountered the same problem in the past and has solved the issue or have any advice I would appreciate it. Also, does anyone know what size hex key I need to get my differential drain and filler plugs off with? I have a 10mm & 17mm hex key but they dont fit.

The diff plug is a 14mm. If you need to get one locally, check AutoZone. I bought a store-brand set of 1/2" drive hex head sockets for <$10 that included a 10mm, 14mm, and 17mm. You can either cut down the 14mm to allow you to get a ratchet up in there, or you can use the closed end of a 14mm combo wrench with the socket to do it. I'm probably not explaining that well, but if you have the two side by side you can figure it out.

dboyles explained it pretty well. You can also get a 14mm hex key and cut off about 1 1/4" and slip a 14mm box end over it.

hi there,

second try to post a reply - a bit shorter this time!. I had the same sunroof problem. Traced the relay which on my RHD Aust car was buried under the passenger floor carpet (LHS) (supposed to be on a rack behind the glovebox). It operated only the sunroof on mine (contrary to diagrams). Relay is blue and the contact breaks away from solder in PCB. I resoldered mine and all ok. Better to replace I guess. Photo attached shows position of break - apologies for poor photo.

Your solution worked for my 1993 325is sunroof. The module was behibd the access door for the sunroof. I opened the unit and re-soldered the contacts on the circuit board for the blades. It worked like a charm. The unit performs normally now. Before it would be "off" and "on" on a random basis. Thanks for the solution.
