3-button remote programming question
I recently bought a 95 M3 and the previous owner did not provide any remotes (says he lost them). Because it's a '95, I'm planning on buying two 3 button remotes.
I've already read the procedure at http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-92-Alarm-Install/101-Projects-92-Alarm-Install.htm near the bottom of the page and it seems fairly straightforward, but I was left with a question. My question is: Do the chips in the two remotes have to be the same, or can they be different? The procedure says to hold down the reset button for 10 seconds, which seems to imply that you're doing some sort of code flush to get the alarm unit to read new codes from the chip that was inserted into it. So when I go to program the second remote, will the first one no longer work? The follow on question to the above is: If the chips have to be the same in both remotes, then do I have to buy a chip set (part number 82 11 1 466 995)? Thanks! Nobu |

Nobu, long time no talk.
I would make sure the alarm is actually there and the wiring is intact. Also I would get prices on installed aftermarket alarms. Chris H and I had a very bad experience with Stellar and I still don't have an alarm in my car so I wish I had just gone to the local alarm shop and had them put one in.

Hey Jeron, wow, long time! How have you been? Do you still auto-x?
I did verify that the alarm module is already there and that the wiring is intact. I don't want to get an aftermarket system at the moment. I'm just tired of having to manually lock doors, etc. If I do go aftermarket, I'll probably end up getting one of those units that sends you a page when the alarm goes off. |

Hardly any AX anymore. I instruct at DE's nearly once a month.
I would be slightly concerned that alarm isn't working since he lost the remotes. Hopefully you can get the remotes cheap. I dont know the programming procedures for the BMW alarm but most alarms are similar. The Stellar alarm procedure is thus: 1. Car ON 2. hold button 3 sec and hear 3 chirps 3. press button on transmitter #1, hear confirmation chirp (repeat for transmitter #2, #3 and #4) 4. turn car off You must do all transmitters each session because it clears the memory. Maybe the BMW alarm works the same.

![]() My question is whether the chips in the remotes must be identical, or can they be different chips... I haven't been on the track (AX or DE) in 2+ years. Gearing up to get back into AX and racing this year though! |
