M Logo Need a DIY guide on how to replace a P/S hose for an E36 BMW M3

Hey guys, I'm in need of a DIY guide on how to replace the P/S hose on an E36 M3 that goes from the container to the pump. I know it's relatively simple and I know the location of the hose, I was just wondering if there's anything technical that I need to do. I was planning on changing the P/S fluid as well, since I have to take off the bolt anyways. Thanks in advance!

Its pretty simple. I think you are talking about the low pressure side. You need a new hose. You can get a molded one OEM type, about $40.00 or go the Napa and buy about a foot and a half of hydraulic hose NOT HEATER HOSE, I forget the size just measure it witha vernier. Its a job to get the old one off so use a razor blade to cut it. It's better to get a slightly under size for good fitment. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften it before you put it on. It cool and shrink onto the male connectors and never leak.

Pick up some good clamps instead of those horrible BMW clamps. Clean out the reservoir. I would recommend that you use a bottle of Lucas Power Steering Conditioner instead of AFT, the suggested fluid, The Lucas Conditioner is basically super thick tyranny fluid. In older vehicles with worn internal parts and seals more viscous fluids can be helpful.

Its a lot easier if you remove the stock air box.

Speaking of hose clamps. Last time I did some power steering hoses, I bought BMW brand hose clamps on line for $1.50 each. They worked just fine.

However, I was one clamp short so I stopped by the BMW dealer. He charged me $4.50 for a clamp that looked just like the others I had, but the one from the dealer did not say BMW on it.

The one from the dealer was worthless. It stripped immediately when I tried to tighten it.

The moral of this story is - you have to be careful about your parts, even if they come from the $tealer.
