93 E36 Speedometer not working correctly

Hello!

My 93 325IS speedometer is sticking! It goes up in chunks until it hits about 40 MPH, then it stops...a little tap on the dashboard and it moves up a little then stops again. My 16 year old is driving it now so he kinda needs to know how fast he is going!

Thanks for the input!

LP

sounds like a loose or dirty plug behind the instrument cluster, it is possible to remove the cluster without removing the steering wheel, but it can be a little tricky.
There are, I think three, plugs on the back, been a while since I had mine out.
If you take it out, replace the bulbs while out. it is easy and the are fairly cheep.

My 88 325is has the same problem. I removed the spedometer from the cluster and found the circuitry behind the face is corroded.

That is common on e30, the e36 cluster is sealed though, no easy access to circuit boards like the one on your 88. I had a hell of a time with my 88 cluster, had it out so many times I could almost do it while driving.
