Hello, I have a 95 325i E36. My engine recently has been idling irregularly, especially when cold, lagging during acceleration sometimes, and giving me terrible fuel economy. It can maintain 25mpg on the highway, but I get killed during acceleration. It's currently averaging 15mpg. The idle will jump to 1000 rpms, bog down to 500 rpms, then settle at ~750 rpms as it's supposed to. It also does this when I lightly throttle in order to get into first gear. Now what's puzzling is generally the engine light will come on if the O2 sensor is faulty, but mine never comes on at all. Where should I start in fixing this?

You might have a torn intake air boot. I would start by inspecting the intake boots and checking the DME for fault codes. Even if the MIL is not ON, there may be pending codes.
