has anyone had or been in a car with a dinian performance chip? i was serious in thinkin about buying one, but was wondering if it was worth the money, and if there is any noticable difference or if it effects daily drivability.

I have a Dinan chip installed in my 89 325is, and there is a big difference. It's only on the butt dyno, but i noticed a huge increase in low end power, and it moves the redline limiter up to 6900 RPM. All in all i think it's a worthwile mod if you also do the exhaust and intake at the same time. My car now growls after doing these mods, and at WOT it sounds just awesome. The only downside to the chip is that you will have to run 91+ octane all the time. This is to account for the now increased engine timing and to prevent detonation.

Dinan chip
Im with Jared on that one. I have had great luck with mine.
Air box or K&N will give you a touch more in the midrange as well. Another nice tweak is to get an intake manifold from the junkyard and get it extrude honed. This will cost 3-500 bucks depending on where you live and who you know, but will definitely wake that motor up. Dinan charges 900 bucks for one of these, do diy is the way to go! jeff |

I'm not a huge fan of chips - mainly because they offer only nominal increases, and are generally expensive for the gains they produce. The biggest gains come from increasing the timing (thus the need to run higher octane gas), and also increasing the redline...

I'm not sure about the E30s, but on the E36s, I believe that there is a separate transmission chip that balances torque and power together. You can replace this chip to have the transmission shift at higher power levels. Power goes up, but gas consumption goes up as well...
