318i exhaust problems.

Hello I just bought my wife a 91 318i our first BMW and we love it we do have a few problems though. The Catalytic Convertor was noisy so I removed it and the noise still persisted so I welded in a generic muffler, still noisy. Only now it seems to be coming from the front end. Spending over 1100 cdn right now is not affordable but I will be replacing the entire exhaust a.s.a.p. I read on another thread that the valves had to be redone at 150-180K, this car has 164000 km on it and the top end is quite noisy so now I am wondering about that. How can I diagnose the valve condition, the car is beautiful the body and interiorare very clean and, it is so nice to drive.I am glad her other car died but the timing could have been a little better. Thanks for the great list. Vic.

Can you describe what the noise is like? E30 M20 engines are naturally noisy from the valvetrain, so it's easy to confuse this noise for a potential problem.

Hi thanks for responding, the valve train is quite noisy I have not heard another 318 but this one certainly is louder then any other vehicle I have owned.
The exhaust noise is more dificult to describe it buzzes in the front sounds like it is coming from the headers, it raps out of the muffler when I decelerate. What could be loose in the exhaust system between the manifold and the first connection? Vic.

Hmm, I would check to see first that you have a good connection between the exhaust manifold flange and the cat. Make sure all the bolts are tight, and insepct for cracks in the manifold.

I am hoping I will be able to hear the valve train better when I eliminate the exhaust noise, which is quite loud.

I will take the manifold off after the holidays. I have never heard a buzzy sound like this before.
