Umm, Guy.... You really ought to consider getting the right tools. It would have made that plug only about 3/4 of a b*tch. A 17mm Allen socket, or even a large 17mm Allen wrench, would have gripped significantly better than an 11/16" nut.

I'm pretty sure we sell the Allen socket, and if we don't all VW Bug shops carry them, and if you can't find a Bug shop I think most Sears still have them.
