Question Tranny Rebuild

I'm trying to decide on whether to "Do it myself" or send it out. The "good condition" tranny I purchased through e-bay was checked out by my mechanic and he said that 1st through 3rd were junk. I'm going to get a second opinion...His estimate for the repair was $2500. That seems way way out of whack.

It seems that a lot of the tranny parts for the different gears are the same parts. Has anyone used a "doner tranny" for parts? I'm sure I'd replace 1st and all the Syncho's with new parts. But for 2nd and the rest, the parts seem to be the same.

Also, anyone with a lead on a reputable tranny rebuilder in San Diego, Southern CA, or anywhere not too far for shipping, would be a help.
