Question Tranny Rebuild

I'm trying to decide on whether to "Do it myself" or send it out. The "good condition" tranny I purchased through e-bay was checked out by my mechanic and he said that 1st through 3rd were junk. I'm going to get a second opinion...His estimate for the repair was $2500. That seems way way out of whack.

It seems that a lot of the tranny parts for the different gears are the same parts. Has anyone used a "doner tranny" for parts? I'm sure I'd replace 1st and all the Syncho's with new parts. But for 2nd and the rest, the parts seem to be the same.

Also, anyone with a lead on a reputable tranny rebuilder in San Diego, Southern CA, or anywhere not too far for shipping, would be a help.

James

$2500 is way off.

I had a complete tranny rebuild and clutch job done by the unnamed outfit in Atlanta for $1500.

Without the Clutch I would have said maybe $1000. Maybe.

I have used "donor transmissions" for parts. The main thing to remember is if you swap gearsets from one tranny to the other, it is best to move the complete set (both pinion shaft and mainshaft gears) as a pair. Mating used gears from 2 different sets will have different wear patterns. Also, the same applies for bearings. Do not use the race from one transmission with the cage assembly from another. Remember your ring and pinion set is controlled by the gasket between the intermediate plate and the housing, the pinion shaft bearing and the shims behind it. Therefore, if you do not want to reset the R&P, do not alter these items or mix with the donor tranny. As you mentioned, a lot of the parts do work in different gear positions.(i.e. same synchos on all gears, same sliders and synchro hubs between 2nd/3rd and 4th/5th, etc.)

Well, I retrieved my "Tranny in a plastic box"

I have a good 1973 sideshifter in my 1973....

Has anyone done a sideshift conversion on a 914/6?

Red-beard, it has been done.

Swap the tranny and the whole shift linkage, including the gear shift lever. (Keep the old gear shift knob if you really like it...) Get the "converter bushing" for the firewall; I think it's the same piece.

You don't have to change the motor mount as the 914-6 firewall mount doesn't interfere with the shift rod.

The same cannot be said of the exhaust. The bent rear shift rod hits it. So you have to attach the side-shifter's rear shift rod into a jig (a board will do) and cut out the bent part of the rod. Weld in a straight section of rod, making sure to keep the ends in the same orientation to each other.

And that's it!

Well, I've been trying to keep the 914/6 as original as possible, except I keep finding "non original" stuff. Like the fiberglass "Sheetmetal". My 1971 metal front valence does look better (and is much tougher!) than the fiberglass "ground effects".

This is not a concours car, so a conversion is not a problem. I guess I know what this "summer's" project will be.

OK, so here is a picture. I cut the "bent" part out and put in a straight piece of rod.

Got ya!
