i was planning an engine drop in the near future for inspection and cleaning and while the engine and G/B is out is it worth replacing the rear cover. is this a big job and how much would the cover cost. i presume it aint free!!!
is this a common thing or does this indicate something wrong or excessive play inside the G/B. no issues with driving the car. thanks

Because of the position of the engine, rear is front on the 911. Perhaps you can take a picture of this and post it. Gear box does crack for various reasons. Mine did because one of the magnets on the speed sensing plate backed out and rubbed against the case. That was years ago and they could not weld it. They had to replace the gear housing.
If it is the nose cover (front most piece), replacement is pretty easy. If it is the mid cover, replacement is an intermediate job requiring a 5/R gears removal. If it is the differential housing, replacement means having to rebuild the gear box and resetting the pinion depth. That is a job done by the most experienced or challenge seeking individuals.
