I don't know if this will help but way back when, I briefly ran 215/60x15 on +23.3mm o/s 7x15 Fuchs on the rear of my (pre-flare)'72. The intereference was in the paint several inches up the fender, it burned a () ~ 3" long in the paint on the fender.
OD for those tires was 25.2"x8.7" a 225/50x16 will be a tad shorter but also a tad wider. The net o/s of the rim will have a large influence on the result. The more + o/s the more room you will have.
I would try before I bought anything.
