If you have your existing alternator rebuilt there is no need to convert to an internal regulated style.
Search for the John Walker drop method for removing the fan with a couple of pieces of 2x4.
If you do change to the internal VR you just unplug the one on the rear fuse panel and leave the black wire disconnected at the alternator.(tie it back and tape it up)
