Ignition Map, Electromotive XDi-2
Now that my new engine is completely broken in I'd like to change the ignition map from the very safe and mundane and I used for initial start-up and break-in to one that (hopefully) allows the engine to perform closer to its full capabilities.
In the interest of not grenading the thing though, I figured it was prudent to get some opinions and insight of the experts here before I download a new Map. Here's what I'm considering. Thoughts? [IMG] [/IMG]

I am only 16 or 17 up top and we started to get detonation with 60# injectors. Are you doing this by the seat of the pants or on a dyno so you can listen for knock..

No dyno, no knock sensor, so need to stay somewhat conservative.

Single plug or dual plug? Dual plug needs about 8* less advance than single plug.

I would think that thing would buck like a bronco with timing #s like that down low. Also your upper right #s should be lower regardless twin or single plug. What fuel,

thats about where I am down low and I have to toss so much fuel at it, I am in the 11 AFR's. I am puling some timing out in the lower RPM and kpa ranges tomorrow if I have time.
I spent the day working in the new addition. |

For twin plug, your proposed map is too aggressive.

This is the ignition map I ran on my twin plug XDI-2 equipped 930.
![]() The car ran flawlessly, several thousand miles on the track with lots of WOT.

You have a fuel map too? I am good up top, but need to trim out the low kpa #'s for better drivability. Obviously we won't have the same maps, but I can get a good ball park to start.

jwasbury,
Was your ignition table a result of dyno tuning?

merlin, no fuel map. My car was CIS still, I only modernized the ignition.
Dap, I started with a baseline recommendation from Richard Clewett who I purchased the Electromotive system from. I also had a twin plug map that Chris Carrol shared with me that I modeled a bit (but from an EFI car). Then it was me tweaking a little bit using the "butt" Dyno. Possibly I left some performance on the table, but I think the car drove really well and I know it's safe because the it survived regular WOT action at the track for several years including hazy hot humid summer weather. |

Jakes tune is a conservative cis track tune. And if you notice his 500 rpm bins are all set at 15* that prevents the idle from falling on its face pulling to a stop etc, he also pulled timing at the onset of boost thru his torque range and then added some back up top. Efi tuning 101

I used to run 14-16*s idle timing, then tried 8. The idle stabilized greatly, and the engine sounds normal rather than "racey" if you will. You can still have great throttle response by adding timing in your higher load bins in the idle range.
Best of both worlds. Got to love 3D mapping! |

I could only run 13* at the most at idle otherwise it would hunt. My ignition map is about 4 to 5* more advanced than Jake's. Maybe I should pull some timing in the mid regions where boost is coming up and the engine is approaching maximum torque. Would this help boost response?

So, I pulled some timing out of my car in the low kpa range and was able to pull alot of fuel out too, but my car seems to be happiest in the 13.2-13.6 AFR range in the 30-40kpa range. If I start to lean out towards the 14.7, it starts to lean misfire.

Yep. That's where I am. At low Ipad im in the mid 13s and around 10-15*. I'll take a pic of my timing map

Conservative, very drivable, handles 20# nicely
