1986 930 converted to g50
Hi guys,
1986 930 converted to g50. Original trans not available. How does this affect the value of the 930, and what to look for on a prebuy. Thanks |

Certainly won't hurt the value!!! It's like a 10k upgrade

It's well over $10k to do these days -- practically double that.
It's an amazing upgrade to any 4-speed 930. What to look for: how the conversion was done a) G50 torsion bar housing installed -- usually not done, as very complicated and expensive b) shorten G50 bell housing & input shaft -- perfectly acceptable, no mods to 930 chassis, engine stays in stock location fore/aft c) bad installations, like - putting the gearbox in the stock 4-speed position and shifting the engine aft 26mm, - putting the engine in the stock position and cutting out the center of the stock torsion bar housing to clear the longer 5-speed IMO, done right, it ADDS value to the car, especially if the car is intended to be driven. If you're an "all-stock-is-best" kinda purist, buy a different 930.

1986 g50
The transmission # is g5001 1j not the g5050,which was the strengthened version for the
930. Will this trans handle the additional torque of the Turbo? |

Yes, it will.

I'm running a G50/01 with 400/400 at the wheels >2500lbs. I notched and plated the torsion tube and did coil-overs.

That is the trans that Eddie Bello, the highest HP 911 on Earth uses. He's well over 1000hp.
Not many 930's would put much strain on these beastly transmissions! Glad I have one.

Thing is, it's not just the HP, it's the lighter weight of our cars. They'll go forward or sideways before the trans fails. I know I can light up 315's when I roll on boost in 2nd. 1st gear is only for parking. I'd love to go with a longer ring and pinion or a G50/50

You'll find the purists hang out on the 911 side, the turbo guys are a different breed..

G50
I had an 86 930 back in the 90's. Recently got into an 89 930. Night and day. The 89 is much better around town. Highway both are equal.

Plus cryo gears if I'm not mistaken from Guard?
But still, the Factory Five guys run these trans in front of very, very healthy V8's.

I have the g/50-50 5 speed in my 87. Previous owner did the work. I’ve had a friend who has driven many different Porsche’s and said mine was one of the smoothest shifting that he has driven. No regrets here!

We don’t cryo our gears. If someone else did after manufacturing they wasted their money.

hmm - pretty sure Eddie's running a turbo G50 variant, and they are different to the N/A G50's. Pretty sure the intermediate case in the /50 & /52s has a bigger bearing and is longer (to accommodate the taller R&P, perhaps?)
N/A G50s are also plenty strong (and when you see them dismantled next to a 915, it's very obvious why) - but maybe not 1000HP tuff... ![]() So the "930 with G50" question - part of the answer as to value-add depends on whether it was fitted with an N/A G50, a fully/partially-regeared N/A G50 or a turbo G50. They would all add significant value in my book - but I'm not a "must have the original 40 year old spare fan belt and disposable gloves in the toolkit" Q-tip weenie. Most of those types don't drive the cars much/at all, so why would they value any changes that enhance that? Sigh. Re-gearing an N/A g50 is both $$$$pendy and inconvenient. As expensive as a longer R&P is, it would have to work out cheaper than sourcing 5 factory gearsets (and, in my application, shortening another mainshaft). I'm only short a 1st & 4th G50/50 gearset if anyone has either... Trouble is, I don't think you can fit a G50/50 R&P to an N/A gearbox - and I'm pretty sure I heard the aftermarket R&Ps are for intended for racing - meaning they're both noisier & won't last like the factory ones. Hopefully Matt will correct anything I've got wrong above. I would love nothing more than to be told I could squeeze a G50/50 R&P into a G50/01 without changing (lengthening) the intermediate case - because my motor/trans only just fricking fit in the car as it is...

Eddie blew up his 50/50 by splitting the case. He replaced it with a 50/01 na box that we regeared and added a spool. That's what was in the car the last couple of years until he totalled it.
The 9" ring gear of the turbo is nice but the cases have always been the weak link. Even today Ekanoo has been splitting the cases on their 997 turbo. And an upgraded sidecover doesn't stop that. |

Heh.. Well, if N/A G50's can live in that sort of league, seems like the Ultima/Factory Five guys don't strictly need to buy up all the G50/50s on the planet - unless it still makes sense to pay the premium and avoid the regear...
