Can I recommend the 964 cam? I’ve had the sc/Carrera can twice and I feel like next time I’d like more oomph up top. The good turbo choice goes a long way to getting good boost response but the sc cam is kinda done by 6000rpm. Next time I’d go with something that goes higher.

Also have had both, 964 for me especially if built beyond stock.

Bob,
Just to be clear, when I reference the turbo being "on-the-boil", it is due to the gearing (8:41R&P) more than anything else. Cruising at 70MPH, engine is turning 3100RPM which is well within threshold boost (starting at 2800RPM).

I'll third the 964 cams. My 930 engine with 964 cams gets peak hp at about 5700 but it keeps pulling strong to 6500 and beyond.

Dave,
thanks I do not recall what the stock RP gearing is. changing that is also something I have considered.

so I will just need to drive around in 2nd all the time.....

but have a long way to go before ready for engine / gearbox, stripping for paint. ....

I have an '89 930 and my Dad's brother has an '82 930 so have considerable seat time in both.

I always wanted an '89 but after driving the 4-speed '82, it confirmed that even more. The G50/50 feels like a modern trans and certainly updates or rather enhances the driving experience. If you've ever driven a Supra Turbo or a 300ZX Twin Turbo or even a 951 or 928 (manual) that's how a 930 should shift, the 4 speed has a wooden old feel to it.

Our 1987 turbo cab with G50 conversion is just right. How can you not love the feel of a G50? Precise feel and perfect gear spacing (for me) 142 in 4th, never attempted to push a 5th gear high speed run. How does one talk their way out of a trip to the county jail doing 100 over the speed limit?

Most of the 930s are a 4.22 FD, though some early ones were 4.00. Stay away from the Albins and Schema 8:41 offerings. They are Soooo noisy.

I got pulled over for going 116 once. Cop told me it took him over 5 miles to chase me down.

My G50/01 only does 129 MPH in 4th hitting about 6500 RPM.

How are you achieving 142? Which model?

I’m going to guess raised redline and 17’s.

To be truthful, I really do not know. Please excuse me: I bought this "930" 12 years ago, it was advertised as a "911 turbo" For 10 years I thought I had the coolest turbo cab in town, until I found out the "930" was born as a targa narrow body. Conversion was well done and she rocks. 142 at redline in 4th, indicated on speedo, I never confirmed with an accurate source.

Currently for sale, including a low mileage 356SC coupe (mostly original)

PM if interested, located in Buffalo NY

👍👍 964 cams were my choice & I'm very pleased with the decision, including some heads optimization.
