Adding an intercooler to a 76 turbo need help
Can anyone recommend a book or give some advice I'm very 911 savvy but turbo the turbos are new to me I'm looking to add an intercooler to my 76 row turbo... I have the original 76 csi and parts and a later mid-80s turbo cis and associated parts see pictures I also have a long neck andial intercooler that I was told is a easy add on that I'm looking to use.. but I am little confused. So what do I need to make this work. What parts are used and what parts are deleted?

I can't see how I can install the intercooler and use these parts the rear one is the 80s one on and the front one is the 76...

You will not use those parts. The long neck intercooler deletes the factory bypass valve. You will need to plumb a different bypass valve into the system. I believe they usually use the 965 bypass valve setup.

ToVery helpful... Thanks Harold I don't see a bypass valve in your set up? Now I need to source the short connector .. do you mind if I post your picture In. The classified under wanted? Or better yet does anybody have these used parts for sale

You can use the photo, but both those parts are pretty rare. I included a shot of the original tapered piece.
One option is to use silicone reducers with straight sections. I got the reducers and straight aluminum sections from Silicone Intakes. Another option is to have a welder make the tapered piece. I made one for my 3.3 motor.. ![]() ![]()

Thanks for your help still a little confused about the 964 bypass valve.. where would that be plumbed in ? I don't see it in your pictures. I'm wondering if it would be easier to use the later 80 parts and buy a later intercooler? Regards Ned ![]() |

The 3.0 intake sets the throttle body at a different angle than the 3.3 intake. You would need to swap to the later intake if you want to use the later i/c stuff.
Not sure what your referring to as the bypass valve.

The original pipes are cross connected with the exhaust waste gate. So when the waste gate opens it also opens a bypass off the cold side of the turbo.. between the cis and the throttle body... I think I found a picture of it but not sure where it should connect I am referring to the black bypass valve on the elbow

That's the blow off valve. On mine, it goes between the back of the i/c and the 90 d inlet hose that feeds back into mixture control unit.
On my Tial wastegate, the top vents to atmosphere and the side outlet goes to the back of the i/c. I went from various n.a. motors to turbos and wonder why I didn't go with turbos from the start. With a few simple mods you should get around 350 chp from the 3.0 motor. fyi, neither one of the i/c's will fit under the stock 75-77 turbo tail. You would either need to go to a '78 and later tail, or a custom i/c made for the early tail. Turbocraft can make one it needed.

Thanks by chance do you have a picture did you use the 964 blow off valve? Rear deck won't be an issue .. the car came with a 3.8l lid

Thanks for the pictures they are a big help
I was able to fabricate the piece between the turbo outlet and the intercooler by cutting and welding the original pipe. now all I need to do is order a blow off valve some silicone connectors and fabricate or find the piece that goes between the CIS elbow and the original turbo inlet pipe... That's a lousy picture The finished product on the pipe is a lot neater looking once i hammered out the dent and That's electrical tape holding it in place ![]() Last edited by gorskined; 04-10-2020 at 12:22 PM.. |

If you don't want a bright red silicone elbow, use
* the factory 1991-94 Turbo intake elbow with BOV port (#930-110-930-382-00 $45ish) that replaces the stock rubber elbow, and * we offer the aluminum intake bypass tube ($89) that replaces the original cast diverter valve plenum. Then it will look more like Lite75's photo.

Chris thanks for the above Info .. funny you mention that about the red .. I didn't like it so a fabricated a connectors see picture I just added a 1 inch nipple on it for the 993 BOV not shown in picture... So my next Question is the bov runs between the i/c to just before the elbow correct..and where in the I/c do I connect the bov as I do not have a 1 inch take off.. can I in large the hole shown on the neck to accommodate a larger fitting?
