Taking the EFI Plunge

I have been reading this forum regularly and feel like it is time for me to post my project in process. I really like all the discussions about modifying and customizing as I am one that cannot keep a car original. A lot of you on this forum are really good at posting a lot of interesting projects/ topics with photos. I have been working on my project now for at least 5 months, so I will try to get as much as I can on this post.

I purchased this 1988 930 turbo back in February of this year. It was a deal that I could not refuse. This car was sitting in in the PO’s garage for many years in a non-op state. He would start it once in a while but that was it.

When I purchased it, it was full of mouse nests and in need of TLC.

I previously owned a 1986 930 that I wish I never sold. At the time I sold it I was almost finished with a 3 year GT1 project and I thought that I would not miss the 930 once sold. I know many of us on this forum have been there and wish they never sold that one special car that your mind always goes back to. In my case it was my triple black 1986 930, I will also include a photo of that car as well. While I’m at it I’ll throw in a couple of the GT1 too.

Now I have come into this opportunity of 930 ownership, I have started the slippery slope as I have heard mentioned on this forum.

I originally was going to do just a few mods, but that all changed pretty quickly once I got into it.

At first I was just going to change the turbo and wastegate spring. Then once I started looking at all the options this is where I’m at now and still not finished.

Motor

-Stock PC’s
-964 cams
-ARP head studs
-ARP rod bolts
-New piston rings
-New rod bearings
-Heads rebuilt
-Intake manifold ports machined to 36MM
-Head intake ports machined to 36MM
-Stock TB

-EFI system by Turbokraft (waiting for shipment) BTW, Chris at Turbokraft as many of you know is great to work with and knows his stuff.

-Tial wastegate
-Tial BOV
-custom built intercooler by my self using same size Sperco core as Kokeln
-Turbonetics GTK 500 ceramic ball bearing turbo

Exhaust;
-GSF Headers
-I will fab the rest of 304 stainless and a Borla Muffler.

Here are a couple of pix of Black Sunshine my last 930:

My previous 930 had some respectable mods, the PO had Patrick Motorsports do the following:
-993 cams
-head work
-K27
-B&B Full exhaust.
When I purchased the car I took it to Vision Motorsports and had them do the following;
-Kokeln IC
-Kokeln ball bearing turbo

The car ran great! It put down 340 WHP. I'm hoping for more with this next build.

The Porsche GT1 project is not for the purist at all, so you can stop reading here as this will be disturbing if you're a purist.

In 2002 I found a guy in San Diego that produced the body of a 1996 P GT1 and thought it would be a great project to build with a tube chassis and a high HP V8.

Before I finished the project there was a guy in Florida that purchased the same body from the guy I purchased mine from. The Florida guy had a different plan. He made his own molds from the body he purchased and created a GT1 kit that could be built from a donor 911. I was disappointed as I thought I would have a unique build that people may not associate with a kit built from a donor car.

Here are a few pix of the car I built and then later sold to a guy in Holland;

Ok, now for pix of my current project.
This the condition of my $8500 purchase when I purchased it.

Taking the EFI Plunge

Pix

Time to get rid of the old interior.

Just moved to a more accommodating home with a garage that allows me to really get into the build.

This ARP hardware should keep the heads from doing the turbo dance.

Chris at Turbokraft recommended setting the timing of the 964 cams at full advance.

Looks like a long block.

I have been receiving a few parts for the project, from Turbokraft and other vendors. I will post some pix later.

Here are a few pix of beginning fab of the IC.

I'm going to use a 3" wiggens style clamp from the up pipe to the IC for easier removal of IC. I will use a Turbokraft weld on fitting that slides over the TB for a good seal from IC to the TB.

I decided to use the Turbonetics GTK 500 turbo because I liked the Kokeln turbo that I had in my previos 930. Kokeln Turbos were made by Turbonetics.

Here are some of the pieces I will be using to fab my exhaust and intake. The 4" 90s are going to be used for my intake to the Turbo. I like what Turbokraft did with Tom's intake system using the 4" aluminum tube routed through the wheel well and back into the engine compartment. Since my turbo has a 4" inlet it will give me a lot more room to work with routing the intake this way.
More of the small parts for EFI conversion;

I recently had a friend build some molds for me to produce carbon fiber parts for the engine compartment. The fan shroud is ready for clear coat in this photo. I know there is a company out there that sells these parts already, but I wanted to make my own. If they turn out OK, then maybe I can offer them to others.

I also did the Wevo trans mount upgrade I tig welded the new inserts in and had it powder coated.

Oh, and that GT1 is *awesome*. Someone should do the same with a 917 replica body, just for giggles

You bought the '88 930 for only $8k??? What a steal. Too bad the PO lost potential $$ but you got lucky. So what's the story about this 930?

Looking forward to see your progress.

The car is salvaged from a theft recovery with no chassis damage. I watch the market pretty closely and found this car on Craigslist in So Cal. At the time it was being offered at $17K. The guy that owned it had someone he knew put it on Craigslist knowing nothing about the car. The owner inherited the car from his brother and also knew nothing about the car. The point of contact was the guy that put the car into craigslist and he was really hard to reach. At the time I went to look at the car there were three people that had already looked at it one offered $14K according the PO.
There was no history on the car and being a salvaged title I was not interested above $14K. The car dropped out of craigslist and several months passed. So one day on my way home from a Fontana track day in the 993 I stopped by the PO’s house as I was really curious about the car.
The PO was home and still had the car. I found out I was the last person that looked at the car. I decided to make him an offer, so I threw out $7500 and he sent me on my way with his phone number in case I wanted to come up. I waited another month and called the PO with an offer $8k; he declined and offer it to me for $9500, telling me he just wanted it out of his garage. I countered at $8500 and he agreed.
I have never really had good timing for opportunities like this and I feel like I finally got a good deal.
When I first purchased the car I decided I was going to flip it. Then after having it on Pelican for sale for that sort time, I realized this is the opportunity to get back into 930 ownership that I missed so much.
And because the car is salvaged I don’t feel bad at all about doing any type of mod what so ever.

I know that guy. He lives about a mile west of me and last I knew he was putting 11" electric motor conversions with a boatload of small lithium batteries into all kinds of cars. I got a ride in a new 997 that he converted to electric and it was going to someone in Norway.
It was totally quiet and the fastest acceleration from a dead stop I ever experienced and then no noise other than tires and wind. No motor idling at a stop and no gear shifting... He started in 4th or 5th gear from a dead stop, it was weird.

His GT1 kit car was gorgeous. It had a 3.2 Carrera motor in it and I don't know if he sold the car.

sorry to swing the subject.
