930 engine noise
Hello,
I was looking for some input on to what your all think about this noise coming from what seems like the drive side engine area. https://imgur.com/a/moue5I6

Not good, obviously. I’d suspect a collapsed chain tensioner and be worried that the timing chain is slapping against the aluminum housing. Might want to sample the oil for aluminum if that’s the case.

The noise comes on about a minute or so after being started. It sounds like it's coming from the driver side. What's the best way to do an oil sample?

I've listened to you vid several times, and if it were mine, I would remove the left/driver's side exhaust rocker's cover and check for a broken head stud - the compression blow-by from that often sounds like a mechanical noise similar to what is in your video.

I would try not to run it anymore until you figure it out. I would definitely pull the valve covers and inspect as it is fairly easy to do... that will also net you some oil although probably not a quality sample to see about metal debris... I would just drain the oil from the motor... drain it onto a rag if you can as it makes it easier to see although sometimes you don't need it
![]() It had a few strange noises going on but I would pull the valve covers first... if you don't see anything there I would say something has gone bad in the timing box... as mentioned by GSXRKen perhaps a collapsed tensioner or like the nut backed off the camshaft if that is even possible. If you do run it again I would use a long screwdriver as a stethescope and see if you can pinpoint the noise, or you can buy a car stethescope and feel around the motor until you can source the noise. Good luck buddy~ J

Okay so when the car first starts up the noise is very low and it gradually get louder within two minutes. I checked around with a stethoscope and feel like the noise is definitely coming from what I think is the scavenge pump? Is where I have the stethoscope in this picture the scavenge pump?

I had almost the same noise, you can hear it in this clip :
https://youtu.be/CeC9iYysiqg and this is what I found when I opened the driver side chain cover (I did not turn the engine in any direction when I switched it off, although it looks like it was turned the opposite direction) : https://youtu.be/OK7LV6gMDfY What I found was a small leak in the driver side oil feel line that prevents the tensioner from getting enough oil pressure, crimped a new hose in the line and issue was solved. I hope yours will as simple as that.

when my tensioner collapsed on my 2.7 it sounded like a big exhaust leak.
it would get quiet at speed, yes i had to drive it 250 miles home. but made noise at idle. the tensioner does its job mainly when you let off the gas and at idle. the other thing i would do is pull the vlave covers and make sure you dont have a rocker working its way out. it really sounds like a tensioner though.
