info on the RUF CTR engine???
So the engine was based on an 87 Carrera, bored out to 98mm, upgraded computer and 2 KKKs but what else? Was the bottom end different? cams? valves? heads? does anyone know, is there a resource for this anywhere. I tried a search but didn't find anything.

Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" speaks briefly of the build on page 160. It sound like most of the gains came from the time spent on engine management along with the mechanical mods you mentioned. He used his own intake, similar to the stock one with larger volume and his own cams.

I would have thought it would have had a lower compression ratio & better hardware holding it all together, something like ARP on at least the rod bolts.

RUF used their own titanium rods, didn't they?
Also, RUF limited boost on the CTR to 1.1bar, but had a manual boost controller, which was adjustable to 1.2bar I believe. The motor ran twin K26's and the Motronics was a modified ECU, which used a speed density / MAP sensor. I heard it was the same ECU as the 962 Motronics unit, but Alois recalibrated it for the 3.4. The engine was single plugged and had two intercoolers mounted to the sides of the engine bay.

Different rods, crank, and dual injector rails per cylinder bank. Of course there is also the 3.4 pistons and sleeves, the intake is really a modified Carrera intake with as mentioned above a total of 4 large fuel rails. Technology has come a long way since YB was built, there are a few monsters running around that would beat it some guys just chose to be private about it rather than be flameed for making claims about such a storied car.

Yeh, lots more powerful cars running around these days, but back in the day, the CTR's power was considered monstrous. There were other "tuners" around at that time who most probably had more powerful cars, but I guess RUF was at the right place at the right time. The CTR was really THE CAR that launched RUF as a marque.

STILL a beast..
3.4 liter 7.5 CR Bosch Motronic 1.2 496 hp / 409 lb ft Yellow Bird was invited back for another super car test not too long ago where it competed against more current cars. I think it still finished in the top 5?

Ruf builds some of the best looking and exceedingly fast machines but Alois prices are outrageous.

It finished well considering the cars and the motorcycle that were present.

The CTR was based on the 1987 Carrera. The article was called "Worlds Fastest Cars" in the Road & Track magazine in 1987
![]() Here's an interesting article!

I believe that was the first test. It was invited back later to compete again in a more recent test. I will see if I can find it.

Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera The last of the Evolution by Tony Corlett. Has a whole chapter on the CTR.
Check out wikipedia.org then search Ruf CTR. Great article, tons of info, My 14 year old son wrote it himself!!!!! |

That is a profound statment; the yellow bird is used in comparisons even 20 years later and then holds its own in the middle of the pack. Amazing! It beat cars like the Ford GT and obliterated the Lambo murcielago

Still very competitive.... even today. Not much tops it, I remember Alois drove the YB to the competition, everything else showed up in a trailer.

The car is just about as fast as todays 997 turbo made in the late 80's. 0-60 isnt as fast but 1/4 mile is close to the 997.
