Project 935 'Blackbird'
EDITED FOR UPDATES
On the project a few people have been asking who's doing the work etc. I'm working with great guys down in Van Nuys at Valley European, Fred is the man! I've lurked for a bit, asked quite a few questions etc, to which RarlyL8 has helped a ton. The final aspects of the project look something like this: Body: Satin Black Paint (interior/exterior/engine bay/trunk) Shaved Drip Rails Factory 935 front bumper with HID driving lights Factory 935 fiberglass front fenders (+2" per side) w/o headlights 1975 911 RSR 15" vented rear quarters 1975 911 RSR 15" version rear bumper with exhaust notches removed 911 R LED Tail Lights (Street Version from Rebel Racing) A.I.R. 911 GTR Tail for 930 with 70" & aluminum uprights A.I.R. 911 GTR Rocker Panels Widebody911's carbon fiber center reflector replacement 935 Mirrors Interior: The following done by Robert Budd of The 928 Leather Shop -Dash Upper recovered in black Alcantara with orange french seams -Dash Lower recovered in black Alcantara with orange french seams -Door & quarter window sills recovered in black Alcantara with orange french seams Carbon Fiber GT3 seats in black Alcantara with orange french seams Carbon Fiber RS door panels Carbon Fiber gauge backing & dash kit Carbon Fiber entry plates with PORSCHE on them Recalibrated Gauges @ North Hollywood Speedo - Orange Faces on all - Tachometer zero out in 6 o'clock position - Speedometer rescreened to 220 mph - Speedometer zero out in 6 o'clock position - LED lighting upgrade - Boost gauge in place of clock Restore lower dash & all buttons/pulls Radio Delete Heater Delete Sun visor delete (vinyl sunstrip on windshield) Hargett 930 Shifter Setup Rennline Adjustable Pedal setup (silver with rubber inserts & black heel toe extensions) Rennline Aluminum floor boards driver & passenger (black with no holes) RSR thin carpet with deleted sound deadening New headliner Momo Protipo steering wheel in Alcantara Brey Krause Harness Truss 5 point safety belts Suspension & Brakes: Triangulated front strut bar Welded in brace for rear shock towers RSR bump steer kit RSR style coilover suspension front & rear Bilstien sport shocks Raised spindles Delete torsion bars 993tt brake setup @ all 4 corners Filtered ducting to brakes via front scoops & side intakes Wheels/Tires: FACTORY ORIGINAL 935 CENTERLOCK HUBS & SPINDLES Magnesium BBS centerlock wheels 16 x 11" fronts & 19 x 14" rears, using Pirelli 355/25/19's for street and Vintage rain slicks for show. Holy COW! that is Ginormous!!! I like it. Will it fit under even an old 930?
very nice! McKenna PORSCHE decal on the white 993. Please up date us often with this project! |
Daaaaaaayam, makes that 315 look like a 225!
Once those huge flairs are on and the car is lowered that is gonna look soooo badass. Can't wait to see the results! |
The shop guys wanted to have some fun so they taped the rear quarters on to judge fitment, which doesn't appear too bad.
The front fenders were supposed to have louvers like the original 935s, so I'm working with AIR to solve that problem. All in all it looks like the rear tires will fit with no problems...however the quarters don't look as wide as I thought they would. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188618834.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188618859.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188618878.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188618895.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188618949.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188619004.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188619025.jpg |
WOW!
I have always wondered why the widebody RSR is so under-represented in the Porsche community. Talk about a wild ride! |
There was a thread here recently that stated where you could buy fender extensions if you want to widen them some more.
|
You work pretty fast. Can't wait to see those tires under that thing!
|
Awesome project... one suggestion though is rather than tackling the interior later, if you strip it now you can have it re-sprayed along with the exterior in one stroke.
|
Also... if you want to part with those Kenisis that are on it now let me know...

The shop I'm dealing with will do nothing other than perfect work, they would refuse to do a simple respray if it didn't involve gutting the ENTIRE car to do so. The entire chassis will be sprayed black (satin for the interior, trunk & engine bay), then possibly a gloss on the exterior. I'll be going with a carbon fiber dash and gauge backing, carbon door panels & window sills, RS carpet, Hargett shifter and some other goodies. The entire car is being gone over and I'll have more updates for everyone here in about a week or so as the shop is getting into it once again. |
Since I finally decided that louvers are the way to go, here is a photo shop provided by Testarossa (of Rennlist) of how the satin paint will look. I'm not going to settle for a greyish or lighter appearing black, it will be as pictured for the effect I want. The wheels will be the 5 spoke also in satin black, the stock wheels were left alone in the picture as to provide a reference and contrast to the paint.
With a satin paint I feel that we'll be able to pull off the RSR rear body work successfully without seeming too outlandish, while having a distinctly beautiful aural soundtrack. This is the certain "black hole" effect I want to instill in the viewer, I hate being in something shiny and attention grabbing...I like it when something takes a second or third look to realize its truly something special, something epic... Opinions are welcome, and again the body work will be done shortly, this is just a teaser of what's in my mind's eye. http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/pubished.jpg |
Explain again how paint is going to make that car not look outlandish? Ha!
Love the louvers. Glad you went that route. |
Not so far.......just some more modifications....wich are on the way....
bumper gaskets away BBS 50 series etc..... http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6927/070507012mmb0.jpg |
Reaper... what rims you gonna go with? Bolt or centerlock? Make?
|
Well actually last night I got on the phone with my shop and they just happen to have a set of perfect condition ORIGINAL FACTORY 935 centerlock setups, so he's contacting some people for the custom centers for the wheels to bolt to the centerlock hubs so I don't know what design we're going with right now (mesh, split fork or 5 spoke) but they'll be 15 x 11" fronts and 18 x 15" rears.
I'll post pics when I get them, they have a few races on them but structurally they're sound and good to be used on the street. I just need a planetary gear torque wrench! |

Cheers, |
I was referring to the bling type of attraction. The kinds of attention the satin black cars get is not the normal kind of attention at all, its more towards the respect and admiration side of things :)
Love your car |
Where ya gunna find rubber for 15 X 11 rims?
Clayton |
Pirelli 345/35/15's P Zero System, I need to have hella big rubber up front so I don't snow plow in every corner.
|
I know what you mean Reaper ! my car was diamond blue first and people allways seem to think hey look at this ********* in his Porsche.
Now people leave notes asking if the car belongs to Darth Vader and stuff like that :) Cant wait to see your car done it wil look awesome i,m sure ! Cheers, |
|
:D
Great looking car Nathan ! Cheers, |
15" rims and tires can look a bit too short on a wide-body car. You need to accurately photo shop those in before writing the big check.
If you do decide to use the 15s the Perillis will fit very well on the 11" rim. They are a bit more narrow than their Yokohama counterparts of the same size. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192890052.jpg |
Well its either 15" or 17" to get a 335 on there. It pretty much boils down to what the guy who does the centers has.
|
I know what you mean. Wheel and tire choices suck for these cars.
|
Well I'm slightly understanding...given the tire sizes we're dealing with here are minimum 11" wide. :)
I for one enjoy these types of 'challenges' as it just means we're few of the few if ya know what I mean :) |
Interesting update guys, after talking with the wife she has convinced me to go all the way on the motor.
We're going to go with an EFI twin turbo setup along with the twin plug we were already doing. More updates on this later. This pushes the finished product back until May-June for completion. The bodywork & Interior will be totally done by January with many updates in between then and now. I just ordered a A.I.R. GTR tail & GTR winged rocker panels and for the top wing blade I'll be using a 70" predator unit from GT Racing. So I'll have the DP tail for when I don't want a lot of attention, and the GTR setup for when I want to go fast. |
Reaper ..saw your thread on this great project and recalled seeing your post on the 935 lolipop
seat Dave at TRE is selling.. If you'd like I have another I'm interested in parting with, project just doesn't have the staying power to see it all the way ! Your car is looking great it would be a nice period correct addition ..two 935 seats ..WOW! Let me know I'll send you a pic to,thanks Bert |
Parts:
Just had the best experience EVER with Mark Hargett @ Hargett Precision buying the 930 shift setup & linkage kit. Mark is really one of the best vendors I've ever delt with. Just purchased the aluminum floor panels, adjustable throttle/pedal kit from our wonderful host. Rebel Racing Products 911 R tail lights with LED's are on the way. I've been speaking with a guy in Germany about carbon fiber interior trim etc. I got his email from Rennlist on the 993tt board, he does quality stuff. The following pictures are what I'm purchasing from him, however my door panels will not have speakers. He speaks very little english but is a great guy, I believe he's the one that supplies FVD with their carbon parts. I'll keep everyone posted on how it goes. 935 Centerlocks
Here they are
They need some TLC to be 100% beautiful again, but I like 'em. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195014563.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195014583.jpg |
centerlocks
i dont see any pics ? |
BBS Magnesium Rims
Okay gents - talked to the shop last night - the rear quarters are on the car - they're having problems fitting the rear bumper and front fenders due to lack of fiberglass on the part where it should be.
So needless to say waaaaaaaaay more work is going into them than was planned but that's the name of the game right? SO...the new addition for the week are the freshly procured GT3 carbon fiber seats in black alcantara & a set of 16 x 14 rear and 16 x 11 front magnesium centered BBS centerlock wheels! Purchased from Bob Barnes who happens to have quite a few things laying around  I'll be using AVON vintage tires, and Hoosier slicks but I might have to get new shells to upgrage to 17" diameter depending on tire availibility. I'll have new pics to update later in the week when new tires are mounted but here are the prelim pics! Later they'll be painted in the same satin black as the rest of the car and just might get the BBS wheel fans as well! Enjoy the vintage racer porn SmileWavySmileWavySmileWavySmileWavy http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195014921.jpg |
fantastic stuff!!!

My friend John Byrnes factory 1974 Jagermiester RSR actually made a full progression from RSR to 935 before John restored it back to original. At one time it looked exactly as your rendering... also just a heads up. If the races in the rear of your 935 hubs need to be replaced... they are about 1200 a piece if you can find them. Used to be a 30 dollar part but there are little or none left on the planet ! Unless you are using 935 suspension you would be better off using 934 hubs , an easier transition
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...05-29-pk11.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...untitled-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...isc/thumbx.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-04-13-029.jpg |
Van,
Thanks for the heads up - the only ones I could find at the moment were the 935 setups. I'm planning on using full 935 suspension so when I do need to replace the races, I'll have to come up with something....... BTW I'm jealous of your collection :) |
Quote:
But unless I am wrong you will need to use 935 front uprights with the 935 hubs. 935 uprights are about 5k a piece if you can find them. And if they are in Europe then with the Euro to dollar...more like 8k a piece. So minimum 10k to 16k based on what I have seen . I think you would really be better served to use 934/RSR hubs. |
|
Actually I can get away with having my existing strut housings modified by relocating the spindle (935 spindles) and some other work I'm not too sure of. The shop in California doing the work has a few 935's that come in for service and repair quite frequently - 935 parts are easier for me to get than 934 parts. The shop has also successfully put 935 centerlocks on a few normal 930's over the years.
Seeing as how this car will be 50/50 street and DE we're trying to still have her drivable on the street. The shop is by far the expert on the car and parts, I'm merely trying to educate myself as quickly as possible. I do know that due to the great reputation the shop has that I'm in very good hands. But these 934/RSR hubs you keep referring to, do you have a source for them? I thought them to be more rare than the 935 setup. Thanks for the input and assistance, I bow to you knowledge :) |
Rory, I can't access youtube, what is it a video of?
