Turbo Conversion Goes South!! Broken Studs
Finally after collecting all the parts needed to do my 3.0SC turbo conversion I got slapped in the face this morning with the worse possible problem...Broken Head studs
![]() I removed the right side lower valve cover and 3 large objects fell into my oil pan, yep it was 3 broken off head stud ends and washers. I then moved over to the driver side valve cover and 2 more head stud ends fell into the pan ![]() ![]() So now my 3 week turbo convertion project will turn into a 6~12 month engine rebuild, or if a come accross a 3.3 long block and pistons for the right price I might go that route. Anyone out there got any good recomendations? I have herd of putting 3.3 P&C's with a 3.0L block with some small modifications but guess I really need to start reading the Porsche bible "How To Rebuild and Modify Porsche Engines " |

That sux.
Have you tried to remove the offending studs and replace them? 3.3L jugs on a 3.0L engine = 3.1L displacement. A friend of mine has one of those factory built engines.

that does suck. I guess the only positive thing I can say, is that @ least it happened now (early on) and you can address the problem.
Good luck

For sure with the turbo pushing extra pressure to the heads this would have been found shortly after a couple of spool ups.
Have not tried to see if the studs can be replaced yet, I will get the entire engine out of the car this weekend, pictures clearly shows the stud ![]() ![]() |

Walking into my garge now is just down right depressing looking at all this stuff.. One minute I'm anticipating an upgraded 911 with all the turbo goodies and next minute I'm comptemplating a engine rebuild. lucky for me this car is not a daily driver..
Guess I can box all this up for awhile ![]() |

That is bad news, sorry to here!
Afterwards you will have something that will last forever though! Word of advice, get that stuff off the shelf quickly before it collapses and your buying bolton parts in addition. Keep the forum advised of your progress! |

Did you do a compression and/or leak-down before disassembly?
You could just leave the case intact and mike the pistons and cylinders; remove and replace the head-studs, then you could do minor head cleanup…. Plenty of ways to go other than a total rebuild – just let the parts dictate what should be done unless you have fat wallet and plenty of time. Munchovie.

awwwww man sorry to hear that, as mentioned you can now build a tough low compression beast to take a lot of boost!

Jesper, I ended up with a Garrett To4E that was rebuilt and have also purchased some GSF headers from Albert who had a T4 Flange welded on. This combination with the 930 Euro fuel head should work out pretty good.
