What oil to use in a 930?
Hello all,
first things first: Newbie in the forum and I've recently purchased a 1985(6) 930 with 33k km's (about 20k miles) which is in a very nice condition - 999 being one of the options ![]() Now would be the time to change the oil to the car and I did try to search from this forum and from the net but did not find what would be the recommended oil to use in the car? (Outside from the factory recommendations that is if newer oils are better that is) Apologies in advance if there already is above information in this BBS ![]() Thanks in advance! |

Synthetics are good for the higher temperatures of Turbos but only the more expensive racing oils have enough zinc and phosphorous to keep the upper valvetrain protected from severe wear. The racing oils need to be changed more often, though, because most of them do not have the detergents to keep a street engine clean.
Most people follow Charles Navarro of LN Engineering and use 20W50 Brad Penn partial synthetic It is the new name for the old Kendal GT1. It has the best mix of zinc, phosphorous, and cost. That said, there are better oils (Shell Rotella, I think) but most cost a lot more than the Brad Penn. Motorcyle and Diesel oils are another option but most are not entirely suited to our applications. Read more at http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html and get some Red Bull and a comfortable chair to read the ultimate oil thread:Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils

After reading all the information available.. it seems to me that it comes down to Mobil One V-twin 20w-50 being the best of the best.
It is still high in ZDDP because motorcycles don't have catalytic converters yet, and it's synthetic so it has a higher flashpoint than non synthetic oil. That lowers the chance of oil carbonizing in the extremely hot turbo bearing housing after shutting down the motor. Also, it is made for the localised heat of air cooled motorcycle engines... alot like our engines. You can usually find it in the small motorcycle section of Walmart for around $8.50 per quart, or a little more at auto part stores. Second best seems to be Brad Penn 20w-50. Some people say it's the best and they are usually the ones using it or selling it. It is definately one of the best choices and cost alot less than the best synthetics. Valvoline racing oil has always been good too, and probably still is. They call it VR1 off road racing oil nowadays. Amsoil is considered possibly a little better than Redline and Royal Purple racing synthetics... but who really knows. It seems the formulations may be getting changed at least once a year these days. |

Brad Penn distributors are a little farther apart. There are a couple in Southern California- TRE Motorsports and TLG Auto.
I bought mine from Charles Navarro of LN Engineering in Momence, Illinois. He has helped contribute so much information to the oil thread. I was surprised how reasonable the price was per quart even shipping half way across the country. Not much more $ than the weak Castrol GTX I was getting from Pep Boys down the street. ![]() ![]()

+1 for Mobile1 20-50 V twin motorcyle oil, I use it in 930 for 1500 miles then recycle it into my Ducati 50/50 with new oil. I order it online by the case, and it usually works out to about $8 per quart after shipping.

Anyone have an online source for Mobil 1 V Twin 20W-50? JLY535, you said that's how you got it...
Rob Edit: just did my own seach; found Amazon has it for $49.69/6 qts, including shipping. That works out to $8.28 ea. The local Autozone wants $9.49/qt. Yikes, this stuff is expensive. Last edited by Rob 930; 09-04-2008 at 10:16 AM.. |

Whats wrong with Castrol GTX 20W50 and not running it too hot?
IF the oil cooler is adequate to manage temps to under 230 degrees and you let the turbo warm up and cool down after a drive is this oil detrimental? Doesn't GTX still have the proper amounts of zinc and phosperous for the rocker arms?

Guys,
If you're thinking of using standard Mobil 1 or Castrol GTX in a "flat tappet" engine like a 911 or 930, you really need to read the threads mentioned above by Flieger in Post #2. That will explain why it's worth paying all this money for oil. Rob |

According the THE OIL THREAD Castrol GTX has been reformulated with much less Zinc and Phosphorous. The high levels of Calcium detergents also impede the effect of the zinc and phosphorous to form ZDDP.
I move that we transfer this discussion to the big oil thread to avoid repeating a long discussion.
