How do I adjust my idle?

I failed the smog inspection today because my idle was 1030 RPM (spec is 950 +/-50 RPM). The tech (I use that term loosely) told me to go see my mechanic and have them adjust the idle and the timing before I return to run the smog test again.

As I really don't have the time to take the car to the shop for this (and I think it idles just frickin' fine), can I drop the idle a bit myself without screwing things up?

If you only require to adjust the idle this can be done by adjusting the large screw at the left hand side of the throttle body under the i/c,,adjust this with the car running and you can see the revs dropping

Can I get to it without removing anything? Do you have a pic?

Yes you can get at it without removing anything,just squeeze your hands in there and turn with medium to long sized plain screwdriver

This is the adjusting screw.
You might be able to turn it with your fingers or a short screwdriver.
As you can see, this engine is not complete but you might be able to reach this screw with the intercooler in place.

The last time I had my engine out I attached a long extension rod to the screw itself, so that now I don't have to hunt around back there for that damn near inaccesible screw.

Yeh, I've still got a crick in my neck from trying to find it on most fully stock 930s even when you know where it is. Especially worse if you have a larger intercooler. The last one I had to move the car around at near sunset and wait,like a sundial, until the light shone in just right. For awhile I had flashbacks that someone had changed things but at the last moment I got a glimps of the screw. They were easily accesable before the intercooler. The 930 development was a work in progress so a few loose ends?? A few innovations like the before mentioned extension help finish the project, to be serviced by other that the 1970-80s Porsche trained and equiped techs ( who anyway are long gone from the Porsche dealerships located just around the corner ).

Thanks guys. I parked the car in my garage for two months (swamped with work)... and then finally adjusted the idle last night. I was able to do it with a very long screwdriver while the intercooler was in place.

I passed smog this morning.

Excellent!! Glad we could help. Now that you've passed emmissions, get back in there and de-tune the thing so it runs right!!

Yeah, now I have to get it back to track-only status... aftermarket exhaust sans cat will be this weekend.

A decade ago you must have been a newbie. Considering the 4204 posts you've made, a person would think you would have intimate knowledge in things beyond a simple idle adjustment! Just jerking your chain... :-)
I still, to this day, swear like a sailor every time I fumble around back there trying to find that damn screw. I've long since lost my extension that was mentioned in post #7 (well, I didn't lose it per se, it kind of incinerated).

Ha! Last I adjusted it... I was 40! Now I am a mindless 50!

Found the screw. Adjusted the idle. Stay tuned for my next request in 2028!
