Cam timing
I'm installing 964 Cams in an '87 930 and I'm asking opinions on cam timing.
The cams are freshly reground Webcam #40 which is their 964 profile. The car is street driven and I would like to have as much low and midrange power as possible with these cams without giving up too much power at the upper end if possible. I know you can't have both without variable cam timing like in a newer car, but would like to get the best compromise possible with the 964 cams. Webcam suggests a timing of 1.25mm with .10mm lash, and I just want to get some opinions from others who have already done it. The car has B&B headers and muffler, Garretson long neck intercooler, K27HFS turbo, 1 bar wastegate spring, Brian Leask's adjustable control pressure regulator, and Imagine Auto modified fuel head. New rocker arms and shafts, timing chains, sprockets and ramps are going in with the cams too. thanks in advance, Jim |

Sorry, just a "Me Too" subscribe as I'm putting in the same cams. I thought the debated-to-death agreement was 1.7mm.
Can I respectfully ask if you're running a wideband with all these mods? If the other stuff didn't put you outside CIS capacity these cams should, no? Again, respectfully. I'm going back to a stock WG spring when I reassemble until I get my EFI done as I don't believe the CIS will fuel with my headwork, cams, and C/R I'm putting in.

I'm curious who's running them at 1.7mm. Mine are set at 1.26mm.

These cams were in the motor when I bought the car, but a clogged cam spray bar on the right side, or passenger side of the car and the scoring and heavy wear on the cam lobes and rockers led to me doing all this. |

Maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about (it happens). 1.7 somehow popped into my head (no pun intended) and I regurgitated it. Obviously I'll be re-researching this judiciously before timing my cams.

I set mine to 1.26mm but I like mine advanced because its mostly a street machine. If it were a track car, I probably would have set it to 1.0mm for the top end. 964 cams are good all around cams and advanced to 1.25/6mm keeps the lower CR engine sharp at lower rpm. I now run GTII EVO's.
